Form rejection I saw in other comments:

Thank you for sending me your query! Unfortunately, after careful consideration, I have decided that it's not a great fit for me at this time. While the premise of {TITLE} was engaging and interesting, I'm afraid that I struggled to connect with your writing. It didn't propel me into the story the way that I'm looking for. I am sorry I am not emailing with better news and no doubt another agent will feel differently. I wish you all the very best luck finding a great home and enthusiastic champion for your work. Thank you for considering me and best of luck with your future queries!

Hi @airbeareri, just to add some context. An agent is useful to the industry as a liaison between two professionals - the author and the editor (and for all downstream professionals, working partners, etc etc). Tightening up a manuscript is a LOT of work, and they need to come at that project with a passion and a vision of where that book might fit in the market. There's a lot of moving parts there.

At the end of the day, they need to set their own rules and guidelines, and a lot of them choose word count. If an author expects them to "tighten" a manuscript by upwards of 5-10% of original length, then how can the agent be expected to have both the passion and the vision to make a full request at the start, when all they see is the high word count?

Agents are humans, some will balk at high word counts, a few might not. Great resource for you to check out is Print Run Podcast. Hosted by agents, aimed at educating authors on the ins and outs of publishing. Really helped me at the start as well.

Good luck!! You've got this, don't let the industry affect your love of the craft :)
