So what about in a first person narrated novel, when the character is thinking to themselves...
I think the main time passive voice is your enemy is when it occurs during scenes that are going on right now and deserve the focus, especially action scenes. 

'She was struck in the chest by the bullet ...' (News broadcaster, not placing the blame ("She" as the object))
vs
'The bullet struck her chest ...' (Riveting author, placing blame on the bullet (Bullet as object))

To be perfectly honest, I really just wanted to hijack this thread and say Careyrox, I love both quotes you display, John Locke's and Henry Rollins'!!  Smiley Grin  embarrassed  Yes

Awww, thanks. Good to know someone appreciates Rollins. Most people don't even know who he is! And the Locke quote, that's just epic.

I've been a fan of Rollins since back in Black Flag and the Henry Rollins band all the way to Sons of Anarchy! Thumbs Up
