I agent-shopped for my epic adventure "The Seven Adventures of Cadida," but agents don't like short stories much, even if they total up to a full-sized middle-grade book (42K words). Their loss.
Anyway, my publisher just contacted me to let me know that Seven is moving to his front burner. The series is cohesive, with each story following the prior one in plot and additional characters. I thought of novelizing it to make it more palatable, but since the publisher had already printed up the first two stories in chapbook format, then I thought he had first dibs on the whole thing.
Coming from Sam's Dot Publishing sometime this year (or early next).
And SDP is also publishing another of my unsellable books: First Duty, a 38,000 word science fiction adventure. This one is scheduled for June/July, 2008.
One of these days, I'll write a real 80-100K novel. I'm just sneaking up on it now.
I'm putting this in here as a reminder that you can go directly to small publishers when it appears that you can't get an agent. You then garner a publication credit for your next book when you're shopping to agents.
P.S. And, if anybody comes in here and says it's not a "real" publishing credit, I don't want to hear about it. My books were vetted and selected by an established publisher. That's real as far as I'm concern.

Sam's Dot Publishing has an excellent reputation from everything I've read.
I saw in Nathan Bransford's blog recently where he said he still doesn't consider those real--but if an editor who turns down other works likes them and buys them, paying royalties--that's real to me. I'm with you, Marva.

Thanks you guys. I'm just getting "sensitive" about this snobbish attitude toward the little guys. Do we not bleed? Anyway, I really like the SDP folks. Some of their writers are award-winners, like Bruce Boston winning a Bram Stoker award. Marge Simon has also won poetry awards and she's the illustrator for a story I've got coming up in Sorcerous Signals.

I love Sorcerous Signals and they always have great illustrations. The illustration from my last there placed #11 in the P&E poll--and my story didn't do badly either. I have a story coming up there in the May issue. Congrats again on the book sale and the story in Signals.

I say HUGE CONGRATS to you on this Marva!!! I don't really get the whole deal with big publishers vs. little publishers. I look at only one thing...Did you pay someone to publish a book for you? If not, it's a REAL publisher. Real publishers pay real authors for their work, not the other way around. End of story. And again, congrats to you!

I have a story coming up there in the May issue. Hey, JeanneT! I've had three stories in Lorelei Signal. All three went into the Best of anthologies (A Time To... - everybody go buy a copy). Congrats on your P&E polls. Who was your illustrator? I got Lee Kuruganti as illustrator for my stories last year. Swoon. She is soooooo good! Let's see. Is it "Assassin's Mark?" My story is in May, too--"The Cursed Valley." See you there!

Yes, I had Lee Kuruganti. Isn't she marvellous?
Assassin's Mark is mine. And my Case of the Misshapen Rune will be in the "Best of" anthology coming out in a couple of months. Woohoo.
I'm looking forward to reading your Cursed Valley.

Here is the link to Sorcerous Signals where both Marva and I will have short stories in the new edition next month. http://sorceroussignals.com/The Best of anthology for Sorcerous Signals will be Arcane Whispers and is supposed to be out in May AND Lee's illustration for my Case of the Misshapen Rune story will be the cover art! I have loved it from the second Carol sent it to me. Besides the story being in the edition. When the anthology is available you can be sure I'll put up a link. Marva, do you have a link to the Lorelei "Best of" Anthology?
