I was wondering what everyone's stand was on querying an agent after they've seen your query in a contest, but you weren't the winner. I've been making note of these contests/agents as I went along so that I could make mention of the fact that I had previously participated, so that they know why the query might seem familiar, but have yet to query any of them. Is a contest lose an automatic "do not query" or is the option still open?

I wouldn't consider it an automatic "do not query." In a contest, there can be only one winner. But in a day of queries, there could be several requests for pages. Yours might have been in the agent's top 10 favorite, or top 15, or top 20. If she reps your genre, I'd query.
On the part about mentioning contest participation. Others with more experience might correct me, but my instinct would be that you should mention a contest only if you won something - first place, honorable mention, finalist status - and not if you merely participated.

Sounds good to me! I wasn't sure if I should mention the participation, though, since the agent might think "hmm, this seems familiar."

I personally might leave a few weeks in between the contest and query - just not to appear pushy (but that might just be me ) But I'd send it. The worst that can happen is a 'no thanks'. Good luck!

Yeah, just give it a few weeks, then send it off. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? They send a rejection? (we really need a shrugging smiley)

Click the "more" button to find it. There's a smiley for everything!

Pshaa, i look through the more button all the time. No, this can only be blamed on my own lack of observance. Or something. Maybe i'm just drunk. OR!! (and this is the kicker) not drunk enough...?
