I do. I'd rather hear a simply "Sorry, not for me at this time" than have my book praised to the heavens before it's rejected.
It's like having a tasty cookie held out to you, to you only to have it snatched away when you reach for it.

Figure you would understand.  And, I pitched to this cat, Ben LeRoy of Tyrus books. The agent sent me a "nice" email after a nudge three months later. Chuck patiently guided me in the right direction and I ultimately found my way here. But this is what Mr. LeRoy typed in his email: "I know this will find a home, but it's not for me."
It was a real shot in the arm when I doubted everything. |

Try having an agent saying they "love" the book (yes the agent used THE love word) but is worried about the hunger games similarities and wont take it on...grrrrr!

It's mean...mean...mean. (not really- I just felt like ranting  ) An agent told me just a few weeks ago that my MS is terrific... great... definitely worth liking... (they even put in one or two explanation points) - they didn't complain about a thing - BUT claimed it just has a little too much fantasy for what they represent. Part of me wants to take it as a nice compliment - the other wonders if they are just being nice. The second half is beginning to win out since I haven't found the agent yet that they claimed would quickly snatch it up. But here's a Karma cookie for you as a small picker-uper.

There are so many factors that go into that decision--it seems nearly impossible to "win." And when you step back and look at it, really look, you realize that by writing a book you have created something from your mind and are asking a stranger to go along for the ride--to not only relate to the characters, but to agree with the choices you've made in telling the story, to agree that the story you've chosen to tell has merit. I've gotten so close that it only emphasizes how far I am from success.
There is just no telling what will happen. We have no control over any of it and that is painful.

It totally seems impossible to win. My last (form?) rejection on a full MS was "you're a good writer ... but this seems a little too familiar for me ..." My novel is historical fantasy about two tenth century monks who are trying to prevent the apocalypse before 1000 AD. Too familiar -- really? "It's kind of like The Name of the Rose meets Good Omens..."  |
