I won a contest, and the prize was a publishing package with Author Solutions. I have one project I don't expect to ever be picked up (although I am still very proud of it), and I was thinking of using the package on this project. Any downside?
I believe that as long as the contract provides that I retain the rights in the project I should be okay, but if anyone has had any experience with Author Solutions (or similar or affiliated companies) I would be much appreciative. PM me if you like. Thanks!
Lots of experiences with ASI (as they're now called), both good and bad.
My advice would be use something like Lulu or Smashwords. If you really want to use ASI, get the stripped down package and supply things like your own artwork.
Be advised, even though you retain the rights to your work, ASI retains the rights to the final design of the book.
In other words, should you happen to sell your book to an agent/publisher, you wouldn't be able to use the design that was created with ASI.
If you get a free moment, check out my blog called Cedar's Mountain, where I have over two dozen posts spread out over three years about the self-publishing game, which also includes my experiences with ASI.
