I need to bring more readers to my blog somehow. I was unable to post for a few months after my sister was burnt in a house fire and now it seems I've lost a lot of my followers. Any advice on how to spice up my blog would be great.

The best way to get followers is to read and comment on other people's blogs. Do not put your link to your blog or site in the comment because it is considered rude/pushy/transparently self-promotional by some folks (the link should be in your profile you use to comment. People can find you from there). They will follow out of courtesy in many cases. You will also find cool posts out there and make some new contacts.

I don't blog much anymore. It wasn't translating into sales and was taking time away from my "real" writing. I had nothing new to add to the already loaded pool of writer/bloggers. If you love it, then it is worth doing. If you are like me and don't enjoy blogging, it is not required these days. You do need a web presence that is not static, though, so if you don't have a website, it's a good idea to post once a week if it doesn't interrupt your work.

This. And then post regularly. If they know you're going to post once a week, and you do, they'll keep coming back.
And it never hurts to maybe host a contest if that's something you're interested in.

I agree, the most important thing if you do the blogs, is to be consistent.

I've been doing it for four years, and if anything, I've been consistent. I create a schedule and stick to it. If I need to change it up, I let my readers know in advance that I'm changing my posting schedule.

Thank you all for your advice. I feel I may be finally making progress. Sorry that I've been off here for awhile. I've been actively marketing my books, which takes a lot out of me. I have a new question. I have been following other blogs and no matter how many I follow, the blogs I follow list on my blogger profile only shows the first two. it never adds the news ones I've begun following. Any tips on how to fix this?

Make sure you're logged in properly before you sign up to follow a blog. And then do a hard refresh of your blogger home page (ctrl F5). I tried to follow someone while I was logged into google with my author email account instead of my regular account (which is where I keep my blogger info), and it reverted to some pretty bizarro information. In trying to make everything simpler, google has complicated a lot of things! Smiley

Anyway, give that a try.

And post fun and/or interesting stuff.  I used to post on mine every few days, but it was about my writing, current word count, submissions -- stuff that only my mother would read if she owned a computer.  Lately I've been trying to post more blogs that are fun, whether I'm discussing how I feel about writing, or something irreverent.

Every Sunday I post a photo of my rabbits (I call it the Sunday Bunnies).  Does that count?   Grin
