Hi all!

I've just started a new project, and it's a retelling of a lesser known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. I want to get a better feel for this genre. Can anyone recommend any good fairy tale retellings, preferably YA? I know Entwined by Heather Dixon, the Books of Bayern series by Shannon Hale and of course the timeless Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Any others?

Thanks!

Haven't read them, but they're all on my list.

CINDER is a clockwork-esque Cinderella
AVALON HIGH by Meg Cabot is an Arthurian retelling (have read and it's decent)
BEASTLY is Beauty and the Beast
THE GODDESS TEST is a mythology retelling (only read the first book).

A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn is a Sleeping Beauty retelling
Robin McKinley has also done several fairy-tale retellings, including two Beauty and the Beast retellings, a Sleeping Beauty one, and one called Deerskin which is a lesser known tale!

Ooh, those sound really good! I have one of Robin McKinley's and put another on hold at the library, as well as The Goddess Test. Anya, do you mean Cinder by Marissa Meyer? If so, I've read it and totally loved it. And Avalon High was pretty good as well. Thanks guys! Karma to you.

I was going to recommend Spindle's End and Beauty, both by Robin McKinley. There's also Pamela Dean's Tam Lin (but it's looooong) and Fire And Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones, also a retelling of Tam Lin (with a side of Thomas Rhymer).

Actually, this is a great post.  I've read a few of Robin McKinley's books, and recently read Entwined.  I didn't know about a lot of these books, though, and I really like fairy-tale retellings, so it's a great list of "to-reads"!

Deerskin's one of my favorite books EVER.

It's sad. I had a fairy tales class in college, but I can't remember many of the retellings we read besides Deerskin.

Jackson Pearce has two books out that are fairy retellings: Sisters Red(Little Red Riding Hood) and Sweetly(Hansel and Gretel). The third in the series will be Fathomless(I think that's the title) based around The Little Mermaid. Birdwing is also good(Rafe Martin is the author I think), and it's about the the boy who got stuck with a swan wing when his sister wasn't able to finish his shirt to transform back to a human. Dang, can't remember the original story title, but I think it's by Hans Christian Anderson.

I just started reading a new one that I wanted to add here...

Enchanted by Alethea Kontis.  It's mainly The Frog Prince meets Cinderella, but it has a bunch of other tales thrown in, too.  It's a new YA that just came out this year.
