Okay, so after starting this thread, I've been on a bit of a horror kick lately, and I just did a blog post on real life horror movie moments.  I think "real" movie moments are interesting to think about when writing, particularly if your story involves cinematic elements.  Essentially, I talk about those moments in my life where I've felt like I was smack-dab in the middle of a horror movie.

So I'm curious...anyone here ever have a horror movie (or book) moment?  I don't mean when something horrific has happened to you, because that is totally different.  I mean those times when something is so fantastically creepy that you kind of happily realize that you'd be totally unsurprised if a chainsaw wielding maniac suddenly broke through a nearby door (although admittedly, that might make your happiness dwindle a bit).  Anyone?

Some of my favorite horror writers include:  John Saul, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker.

I don't know if this counts, but here goes:

When I was a teenager, my two best friends and I sneaked out of the house (I should mention I live in the middle of nowhere. Woods, hayfield, woods) and while walking down the road to meet another friend a car pulls up to us. It's nighttime, no street lamps just woods This is also before cell service came to my area so none of us had a phone. The driver tries to talk to us, but he is weird and the woman in the car looked strung out, so I told my friend to keep moving. The car goes on then a few minutes later we see headlights. The same car passes us by then a moment later -- headlights! We streak into the woods, running over fallen branches and tree trunks. The noise is amplified. Every snap of a twig. Breath. Heartbeat is like a war drum alerting everyone to where we are.  My friend panics, wailing horribly loud. My other friend tries to calm her down but we have to keep moving. Even in the woods we see the headlights of the car and it slows directly in front of where we hid. After a few minutes, I get sick of it, grab a big a** branch and get back on the road. I was ready for anything! Adrenaline surged through me -- the branch felt like a shotgun. No cars go by as we bolt four miles back to my farm. While we cut across my field a big black shape materializes out of the woods surrounding my property. I ready my branch -- my friend is crying -- I pull back to charge and hear laughter -- familiar laughter. Our friend had the same idea we did though he knew the short cut through the woods. Needless to say I didn't hit him with the branch, but it was close.

Come to find out, my mom's dog had followed us and he was walking on the road stopping when we did, which is why cars kept slowing down. The neighbor had a party which counted for the traffic on the road and the drunk passenger we met.

Haha, Nina that is a perfect example!  Ooh, that must have been so scary when it happened!

I think my ultimate moment was when my co-worker and I were working in a school over the summer, which was closed.  Many creepy things about the school, but the worst?  Walked down a hallway two or three times, and things were perfectly normal.  Then, walked down the hallway again, and suddenly...there was music coming from one of the classrooms.  The room was pretty much empty, but there was an old radio on a shelf, playing old, wordless music.  Which had NOT been playing before.  My co-worker wasted no time...she went to the radio and ripped the cord out of the wall!

Well, it had that type of feel to it...We had a family girl scout outing (camping trip).  My husband drove up separately from my daughter and I because he had to work the next morning, so he was going to set up the tent for us.  When we got to the camp site, there were already 3 or 4 families from our troop set up.  Suddenly, it started pouring rain and storming.  We had just gotten set up so we sat in the tent eating.  About 8:45 (15 minutes before they closed the gate) one of the moms knocked on our tent and said they were leaving because their tent was soaked.  My husband was leaving because he was working and this place was about 45 minutes from our house (he was going in the other direction).  Anyway, we didn't have time to pack up and as it turned out every other family on their way either turned around before they got there or decided not to come and the other families already there left.  So it was just me and my 11 year old daughter.  We didn't know who else was around because it was dark when it finally stopped raining.  That night, my daughter went right to sleep (I didn't).  I finally fell asleep and woke up because I thought I heard someone unzipping our tent.  Every scary movie (including some that I never saw but knew about like Texas Chainsaw Massacre) crossed my mind.  I had never been so happy for the sun to come up!

Haha, yeah, I'd say that was a good horror movie moment!  Someone unzipping your tent?  Creepy.  It's amazing the kinds of things we hear in strange situations...

How am I supposed to avoid this feed when it starts talking about Silent Hill and Resident Evil and Alan Wake?Huh???

Jeff Long's The Descent was adequately scary for me...

Did they make a movie based on this? Or am I thinking of something else?

There was a movie by the same title.  But it was not based on the book.  Though that was a scary, disturbing movie I think the content in the book was more-so.

I think Stephen King's IT! is the only novel that creeped me out.

IT is a great book...I don't know if it scared me, but it definitely made me cringe at times, which is just as good.  I loved those kids, too  Grin
