It's an internet law Godwin came up with that, no matter WHAT the subject matter -- at some point, any discussion board discussion if it is allowed to go on long enough, will bring up some analogy to Hitler or the Holocaust.

This book was on the news this morning. Apparently it was banned from some libraries and now they've unbanned it since it is so popular.

bookbanning is the best thing that can happen to a book. Because it makes everyone in that area rush out and buy the book because it's forbidden fruit. And the library was only going to buy 1-3 copies anyway. |

bookbanning is the best thing that can happen to a book. Because it makes everyone in that area rush out and buy the book because it's forbidden fruit. And the libray was only going to buy 1-3 copies anyway. They said on HLN that this library now has 12 copies. o_O |

I just read the latest recap, Ana goes to meet the Cullens, and she and Alice hit it off famously... Soapbox time!  I don't get it. Why hasn't Meyers sued for the blatant theft of her intellectual property? It's not like it can be argued that the similarities are accidental--there is a version of this novel with the names from Twilight right in it. A few years ago authors were practically tarred and feathered for stealing far less material than this. Yeah, I get it that this is a fun evolution on the latest trend of lazy publishing (Twilight *without* Vampires!) But the thing about the mashup fad is that those works are in the public domain. Meaning the original authors are all dust in their graves. It's not like Jane Eyre's daughter is going to sit there reading a book and say "Hey! Wait a minute! I've seen this before--when my mother wrote it! Where my check, beeyotch!" |

Bet me Meyers has consulted her attorneys already, and if she hasn't sued, there's a reason. It may well be that because the book is so popular she doesn't want to mess with it: she may feel suing would make her look bad to all the people who are buying the book now, and maybe she figures there will be a runoff effect of all the women who've read 50 Shades but never read Twilight, maybe now they'll pick up Twilight looking for the character who inspired Christian Grey.
Regardless, she's not hurting for money and I doubt the 50 Shades franchise is going to materially detract from her own franchise.
I don't think you can sue someone just because your work "inspired" theirs. It may be that she and her attorneys feel the differences are just different enough that a judge might rule against them. Or...she may be waiting for a better time to bring out the big guns. But it would surprise me if she (or her publisher) hasn't already clocked a few billable hours with the lawyers.

And then came Stephen--I don't do "quotation" marks--Ambrose. I promise if the publisher A's lawyers are bigger than publisher B's lawyers, they'll sue. If both publishers are under the same parent, they look the other way and tell the author in question, "congrats, you just took one for the team. |
