Ugh!! Like a big idiot, I totally fell for the Domain Registry of America scam. I usually don't EVER just send money off somewhere, but I'd been thinking about my site domain, and I knew the time to renew ownership was at hand. So when I received a notification in the mail with my name, site address and CORRECT expiration date, I was relieved that I hadn't let it slip through the cracks.

But it's NOT from my registrar! I use Weebly and they automatically renew your site ownership if you're in good standing. So basically, this company is acquiring your info and trying to transfer site owners to their web hosting company while charging $35 for the ownership of your domain. I'm so pissed. Fortunately, I started digging around once they asked for the EPP key code because I had to contact Weebly and they warned me about the scam and I didn't end up completing the transfer, but they still charged me.

So now I'm in the position to demand my money back and contact the Federal Trade Commission. Pain in the BUTT.

Lesson learned. NEVER send money to a domain registry company that sends you paper mail or otherwise. Use your web hosting company and keep tabs on your expiration date!!!

No problem. Even if these people actually do web hosting, what a tacky way to go about getting business, right??? If anything, they've only earned a horrible label. I filed a complaint with the FTC and I read somewhere the DROA is responsible for returning the money within 7 business days and may possibly have to pay ME 6 bucks for the inconvenience! 6 bucks kinda covers a drink at Starbucks, but it's the principle of the thing. So if you've also fallen into this trap, take heart--there's something you can do!
