I'm so close to finishing my revisions I can SMELL the bond paper.
I have combed, petted, dressed, re-bathed, powdered, perfumed, and massaged it, and this project is so much better than I ever thought it could be. I am super duper excited about querying it.
Then I heard that August was a bad month for queries because everyone is on vacation. I know that in Sweden, the whole country pretty much takes this month off. I know here in Texas, it is hot enough to sap the vim and vigor from the heartiest of souls, so everyone stays inside in the AC and keeps their heads in the freezer.
But, hearing that agents won't be around and I may as well wait until Sept. to query is disheartening. It comes with its own "wah, wah, wah" sound effect.
So, I'll stick my fingers in my ears and ignore that piece of advice and send it out when it is ready. As long as the agent's submission pages says they are open to queries, I figure I'm good to go.

I've had requests in August, so I don't think it's a wasted month. But Mercury is in retrograde right now, and personally, I'm running into all sorts of communication problems. Yesterday, our land line phones failed because one phone went wonky. Today Yahoo email is down. JeanneG

Since supposedly August is a terrible month for submitting to editors, I've heard some agents hold off on all client submissions until September after Labor Day.
Ergo, you would figure August would be an awesome month to query and September would be terrible.
I don't think there's a verdict out about it.

i mean, there's always "bad times" to query. In the winter there's holidays, in the spring there's conventions, in the summer there's vacays. Really, if you're ready, go for it.

Yeah - I'm getting ready to query again and I was kinda wondering the same thing. I guess I'm afraid if I query in August my email might get lost in the shuffle - I don't know why!

Plus, I didn't think interns got any time off. Oh and Yahoo mail SUKKS. J_to_the_G tell me more about this Mercury thingy, you facinate me.

LTTP, When Mercury is in retrograde, the planet mercury appears to be moving backward around the sun. It's an illusion associated with the orbits of the planets and the sun and happens about 3 times a year. The theory is that this creates chaos with general communications and technology associated with communications. I don't believe in astrology, but I will admit that a lot of screwy things happen when Mercury is in retrograde. One of those rejections was on a partial that had been out longer than any other according to the stats on QT. I had written it off long ago... Here is a link that tells you about all the things that tend to go haywire during retrograde: http://www.astrologyzone.com/forecasts/mercury.htmlPretty interesting stuff. JeanneG

Well, considering I've had a pretty bang up success with my query (30% request rate) and the last few weeks I got nothin', like eerily silent, I'm thinking there is some truth here.

Just for the sake of reporting all the news that's fit to print... Kristen Nelson has a blog post today about 68 queries in a day and how she's more likely to say "no" this month. And an aquisitions editor I follow tweeted today that she wished agents would leave her alone this month. YMMV.

Freelancing is totally dead this time of year, too. I've gotten stone-cold silence from every magazine editor I've pitched since July, and my regular clients are all MIA.
Apparently it's time to take a vacation >.>
