Hi Yoshi97, thanks for your help. I am not sure what you mean by:

However, I think fiction categorizations tend to lean more toward determining target audience and genre (YA sci-fi) and fiction categorizations are developed upon placing your book in one particular spot in the store (sports).

I want to be able to search for agents within more than one genre to narrow my search for who to query. My book fits into a few categories, so the more the agents like all of them, the more likely they will be interested.

I'm with ya on this one. It helps to narrow down your search to those who would be interested the most.

However, non-fiction stories tend to be divided among categories and fictional stories are divided (and subdivided) between genres.

The difference being, a cookbook written by a prize fighter would only be seen as a cookbook, regardless of how many wins the prizefighter had in his career - and a sci-fi/fantasy  novel could be seen as sci-fi or fantasy.

You can narrow down your agent list by finding an agent that deals in all the categories your book fits into, but know that non-fiction agents will typically try to categorize your story according to the shelf they expect to find it on inside the bookstore and will only choose to judge it from that perspective.

Fictional agents deal in genres, so they aren't so much interested in what shelf your book will inhabit as they are the feel of your story. Star Wars is an excellent example, as it is really a fantasy novel (due to the aspect of The Force) but can be found in the sci-fi section of many stores.

Still, it would be nice to multi target non-fiction agents, as its nice to be able to pare down that ominous list of agents. Smiley

I'm afraid it doesn't do multiple genres for non-fiction.  But if you send me a few genres, I can do a quick search for you and send you back the results.

clap clap clap clap clap  Yay Patrick!  No wonder this is the best damn site out there.

Sammie, there is another premium feature you may find useful.  It is "agents with similar taste."  If you find one agent who reps your type of book, you can generate a report from that agent's page that will show this info.  (PM me if you need help.)  Yes

OK, I found a little spare time and so created a couple new search pages.  One for fiction and one for non-fiction.  They allow you to search for agents who rep multiple genres.  They are kind of basic without much gloss, but should do the trick.

Fiction http://QueryTracker.net/FSearch.php

Non-Fiction http://QueryTracker.net/NFSearch.php

I hope that helps.

Patrick, you're awesome. I think you should open it to where we can give you karma whenever we want. No more of this waiting an hour where you're concerned! Karma again, even though the computer won't allow it.!
