So...I logged on today just to take a quick peek--I was supposed to be working ..there were about 15 new posts, but I only clicked on one. When I came home and logged on, it only showed 2 new posts... Patrick--or anyone--help!!

I've been experiencing the same thing for days too! I felt so unloved and abandoned.

Maybe they go stale? When that happens to me, I click on "read all unread posts" or whatever the option is. They seem to cycle out in time. That's how I miss some of the welcome thread sometimes if I don't get to them right away. PAAAAAAATRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK! Maybe he heard that one. I yelled pretty loud!

You called, oh loud and and persistent one (Mary)?
I can't answer this question as authoritatively as I would like, because I didn't write the forum software. It's a package provided by another company. Anyway, what I THINK happens is that the system determines new posts based on the date and time you last viewed a particular section. So if I viewed this section today at 10am, any new topics after that will be considered new. But if, at 11am, I log in and viewed only 1 of the 10 new topics, the system sees that I viewed the section at 11 and assumes I viewed all the posts in that section, removing the new flags.
Anyway, that's my best guess. I hope it helps.

As soon as you logged out of the session (closed down the internet), it marked everything on that list as read. When you logged in again, you started a new visit. Software is smarter than it used to be, but the super smart stuff is super expensive.

Patrick! Help!I hit "mark all posts as read" yesterday. Now NO new posts show when I hit "Show unread posts since last visit." But when I go into the individual boards, there are lots of new posts! What did I doooooooooooooooo? What do I need to change? This used to work. Recently, even. Thanks!

You may have to log out and back in again, since it doesn't consider it a new visit until you do.
Try that and let me know what happens.

I tried that yesterday. It didn't work. I checked earlier this morning. Still no go. It is working now!Your magic thoughts fixed it! Thanks! I swear, I'll never touch "mark as read" again - until I forget this headache.

Rats. Everything is gone again, even though when I go on the individual boards, there are lots of posts marked "new". Help. Edited to add: I just noticed a new link -- New to me, anyway. Click here to try all unread topics. That seems to do what "Show unread posts since last visit." used to do.

I need an Icon with a Dunce Cap!!!!! As a newbie, how do I acquire a little avatar? Is there a photo file or something? I'd rather not use any of my personal photos. Thanks.
