Senshi, Lannie, I am right there, too! I was dead sure my latest and my newest were both Commercial Fiction. But then I see there's Commercial Women's Fiction. But wait - it's far more commercial than women's - it's just that I have a female driven story. So, then someone might suggest ChickLit, but I'm positive it's more literary than that.
Oh, so it's Literary Fiction?
Well no. Too breezy in places for that.
Why can there not just be It's-A-Frickin'-Story-For-All-Genders-And-Ages genre?!
I'm thinkin' I'll just stick with Commercial, because my screenwriting background has me writing stories that I think would make a good film. Not an arthouse film, not a summer blockbuster, not a romantic comedy. Just... just...
Ugh!
(walks away muttering to self)

Thanks for the site, Lannie. I went to an agents website earlier and it stated they accepted commercial fiction, but not genre. And I was like I had thought that commercial was a form of genre, but whatever!

Hey Senshi - take a look here! I just got a rejection from a query that was sent maybe 6 months ago... The agent sent something in her rejection that seemed interesting (if not more confusing).
Here:
"I read your query with interest because I am looking for 'up-market commercial fiction' projects (that's what we're calling the more commercial of the literary works) with young-ish protagonists..."
I don't know if that helps... but somehow it made me feel like I was right in calling my work commercial.
However... Anyone wanna take a shot at defining "young-ish" in this context?

The MC of the last novel was 33, and I guess she fit under that age demographic.
The new MC is 37, but she's chasing what she was at 17... so maybe I've still got something that casts a large age net.
