I have a question.  If my characters are having a meal in a restaurant, can my character say, "I'll have a Coke." or should I stick with "I'll have a cola."?

Name the product and let the publisher deal with it if it's a problem.  Have the characters say what sounds natural.

OMG! I'm the goddess of product name dropping! I've tossed in : Sweet & Low, Comet, Bennigans, Whole Foods, Diet Coke, Taster's Choice - to name a few. We all live on the same planet - most of the time - so I think readers like being able to relate to similar likes or dislikes.

Certain names are trademarked, but in a novel it will fall under fair use. Kleenex and Xerox are trademarked names that the courts have ruled can be used without trademarks, though (as in, "Hand me a kleenex, will ya?")

So specific names that have become generic in usage, Jell-O instead of gelatin, probably all fall under the Kleenex ruling?

In the interests of versimilitude and familiarity, I used a ton of them, everything from Victor mousetraps to Wild Turkey 101 to Jessica McClintock No. 3.  Smiley

Wow, you've got me outgunned, for sure. All I had was a Colt Python, a Walther THP .25 ACP, and a Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull.   Quick Draw
