Is anybody else submitting short stories to magazines?  Just wondering if it would be worth it to ask for a tab for magazines and whom to contact.

Duotrope.com and Ralan.com provide this function very well.  Keeping up with mags opening and closing is a 28 hour a day, 8 days a week job.  Let Patrick stick with the agents, and kudos for him to added publishers.  The latter may be too much anyway.  Besides, the "good" publishers rarely take direct from author submissions.

Short stories, essays, articles and poems are perfect for now because magazines have no qualms taking on a beginning writer ifthey like the piece you've submitted. They don't have to worry about losinga lot of money on you, or whether you can perform: they have the piece in hand.

So you pick up some money and some bylines that way. Go for it!  But Duotrope and Ralan really have that market cornered already.  Smiley
