Did everyone see the announcement about the YA contest? They want a synopsis and the first 5 pages. I wondered if I should submit because it says they want only finished mss. Mine is done, technically, but I was planning on tweaking it in the next few weeks. SHould I still submit?

If your manuscript is complete I would send it and continue to tweak away for a couple of weeks afterwards as planned. I doubt they'll announce a winner in that time period anyways.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

I plan to enter as well, it would be a good chance to try out my new and improved query letter...

Kimmy, are you talking about our upcoming contest on the QT Blog? If you guys who write YA haven't read about it yet, Anna Webman of Curtis Brown is our guest judge (thanks to Suzette Saxton, who is organizing this one). She's taking the first 5 pages of the first 70 entrants. Info can be found here: http://querytracker.blogspot.com/2009/11/agent-judged-contest-announced.htmlGood luck everybody. We haven't had a contest in a while, so we're looking forward to this one.

Sounds awesome! I don't think my new MSS will be up to snuff by that time (haven't even started revising yet!) and haven't given ANY thought to a synopsis as of yet! I'm not feeling the love so much for my MSS that I've been querying lately. I mean, I still love it, but not feeling like having it rejected anymore right now, LOL! I'll see if I get anywhere on the revision and synopsis and will decide then...

I think it would be great to enter, but I'm in the same boat as Kimmy. It's finished and I'm in the middle of tweaking it. I'm even thinking of throwing the towel in on Nano so I can go back and work on getting it perfect before then.

Anna is planning to take two weeks to read the submissions, so really, you have until Tuesday, November 24 (I might even go as far as Wednesday or Thursday--which is Thanksgiving) to get your stuff ready. Since it's the week of Thanksgiving, I'm willing to bet we won't be announcing winners until the following Monday. I'll double-check with Suz on that. But still. You probably have until the end of the month to finish up the revisions on your MS. I mean, even if you win, you don't have to submit to Ms. Webman like, right that second, you know? Thanksgiving provides a nice little buffer. FWIW.
Good luck!

Mary, yes, thats the contest I am talking about. I feel nervous just thinking about it! Today I spent a few hours and got through 2 chapters. If I can keep that up, and I plan on doing another chapter tonight, it will be tweaked by Thanksgiving. Then if theres time I can tweak some more! But thanks to QT I have a query letter and synopsis all ready, and even my first 5 pages were helped tremendously! Today I skipped my writers group because honestly, this place is so much better! Good luck to all of us, I would be so happy for her to pick one of the regulars around here - hopefully me!

Mary, another question. My current synopsis is 430ish words. Does that count as one page? I posted somewhere else about it, but some said it would be fine. I thought about 250-300 words was one page. I know printed and e pages are not the same but I dont want to be disqualified because of doing something so simple wrong. And it doesnt mention a query letter, does that mean one is not needed? Thanks for your help!

Suz says that's fine. As long as it isn't over 500 words, you're good. The shorter the better. I've read yours, Kimmy and it is not too long. Ms. Webman was simply trying to avoid LONG synopses. Can't say I blame her. Yawn.
