Partials -- 4, Full -- 1

« on: January 08, 2008, 04:34:27 PM »

After a couple of "no's" I sent out another query this morning to Alexandra Machinist. I got a request for a partial after only a couple of hours! Yay!

Congrats. What agency or publishing house is she with? What's your book about?

Alexandra Machinist is with the Linda Chester Agency. My book's a traditional fantasy. My books have a lot of elements that I guess some people would call cliche, but that's what I like to read and that's what I like to write about. This one is about a dragon and a bard. The series I'm working on now has elves and wizards in it, but I like to think that it's still a bit atypical.

God, that sounds so awful and boring. They're really much better than that. (So's my query letter, for that matter.)

I had a dream last night about a wizard ala Harry Dresden being stalked by creatures of the shadow world. Wish I could remember more about it. It was pretty spooky.

Hi -- here's my "log" for the last six months"

As of Feb. 2, 2008:

112 queries sent out since July 2007 (23 paper, 89 email)
Requests for partial mss:  12  (8 ultimately rejected, 4 still reading)
Requests for full mss: 2 (1 ultimately rejected, 1 (presumably) still reading though it's been 3 months!)
Queries still viable (less than six weeks old): 24
Not interested:  66
No Reply:  12 (therefore, not interested)
Email not deliverable: 1

Request/response rate: 10%

All I can say is, I am known for my perseverance!  sigh.

Still those are amazing stats! Did you get any feedback from the passers?

Hi gypsygurl - thanks.  I got mostly the usual "Not really for me/my agency; please remember this is a very subjective business and another agent may feel this is exactly what she needs. Good luck."  Two or three agents actually said they found the story "compelling" and my writing was "well crafted" - but still, it didn't work with their objectives.  The worst was one agent who read the partial and said she didn't find it "captivating" enough to pursue it with the passion required.  I hate it when they say they "have to be head over heels in love" - it's so personal!  But, i'll keep trying - I know there's an agent out there somewhere who will see how great it is! heh heh.

In less than a month of sending out queries this time around, I've gotten 15 responses, and three of those were requests for partials. So I'm cautiously optimistic. The latest was from the Barbara Bova Agency. I've another 25 queries pending.

Good news and hoping for the followup request for the full ms.  What the heck, why not a Rep offer instead.  Then the rest of us can say nice things and throw knives behind your back.
