If you plan to email a specific agent, but the agency only lists an email for the whole agency, what do you do?

Thanks!

Address your letter to the specific agent you want to read it anyway.

Pretty much like what was said above me.  I've read several blogs that state Dear Agent, Dear Sir, etc. is frowned upon and will likely end up in an immediate DELETE.

But the question I have is will it get to that specific agent FOR SURE? Why don't they each have their own?

Because they don't want to have their own. Incoming queries would be read by a bunch of interns who would then sift out the promising ones and direct them toward the intended agents OR toward an agent more suited to the query.

I would suggest that your subject line would be something like this:

Subject: QUERY FOR {AGENT NAME} / TITLE [genre]

and then begin with Dear Agent Name:  to make sure it would go to the correct agent.

It depends on the agency.  Some have an intern screen all queries, some share them with all agents, and some direct them to the listed agent.

So, no, there's no guarantee that it will go to the right agent.

So if you get a reject on it, should you assume you should never query any of the other agents?

I'd wait a couple of months and rework the query, which you'd probably do anyway, and then it's probably safe to query a different agent

I didn't requery the agency if all the queries went to the same address.

You can query another agent after a rejection or about 4-6 weeks of no response. I have done that and gotten a request from one, when I received a rejection from another. Make sure to put the agent's name in the subject line.

^ Thanks for that info. I never considered it.  But I know Andrea Brown agency specifies not to query twice, even if its with another agent.
