I wrote up a query
«

I wrote a query according to a book that I read about writing winning queries and proposals. Then I looked at many agents and they all want different things. They are close in their requirements but still they do have differences. Has anyone else found that to be true?

Oh, yes... This is most certainly the case. Unfortunately, it's impossible to write a single query that will satisfy all agents' eyes. However, as you pointed out, you do at least have a backbone of a query that you can tweak to meet agency requirements, right?
Above all else, it's important to do what the agency asks of you. Do not shun their requests just because you have the ready-made query.
Hope this helps... and welcome to the boards!

What I did was write up one basic query letter. If agents asked for different things, I would either add to the query I had, take out, or switch things around a bit. This approach just seemed to work for me.

I find that the basic one page letter is useful in all circumstances, but to follow directions I'm sometimes enclosing a synopsis, and sometimes not, etc. Five pages, ten, thre CH... they're all different in that regard.

Yes that's very true. It's what makes it soooo time consuming - checking each agent's requirements, tailoring the query to meet their guidelines, including a synopsis (that's the right length) or not, or three chapters, or ten pages, etc etc etc
