Nostra I really do feel sorry for the author - but she instigated the wrath of other writers. I tried to read the first 5 pages of her book - I was confused from the first paragraph. If only she got a beta reader or a copy editor to help her as it is clearly evident she hasn't a clue what she is writing.  She probably has a fantastic novel which needs a lot of polishing.  I see Hooly Isle has also put this on her thread - Kindlebooks also has a thread on it. She sure has made a statement.  Such a pity.

I also suspect that this author hasn't gotten too many reviews anyway which is why she is SO sensitive to the mediocre one.  I can understand feeling compelled to defend and contest, but again, it needs to stop at the feeling.

Strangely enough, I'm at the point where a bad review just rolls off my back ( I just got a whopper last week!) and like Nostra said, I'm just grateful they read my work.  wink2

This has gone way beyond telling an author she should have kept her mouth shut. It has turned into a virtual lynch-mob mentality with dozens of 1-stars reviews of her novel from people who don't even claim to have read it.

It's frankly a bit scary. Yes, she should have kept her mouth shut. She certainly shouldn't have told the reviewer he was a liar. She was stupid and immature, but... what she didn't isn't so bad that she needs the lashing she is taking.

Well with all this publicity, she's probably a best seller by now, no matter how bad her book is

It seems to be selling briskly, due to the hype.

But seriously, this has crossed over into cyber-bullying.  I'm not sure if the people who are posting reviews are asking themselves how it would feel to be on the receiving end of this.

I agree. I am beginning to feel sorry for the author. She made a terrible mistake, and sure didn't help herself any by continuing to argue and tell people to F--- off, but there's no need to keep piling on, after she has been knocked down and dragged through several thorn bushes. I am sure by now she is rethinking things.

A lot of times things are happening in people's lives where one small additional problem becomes the last straw. Who knows what may have been the contributing factors for that author. I would like to think she will think about it and apologize for some of the things she said. Likewise, I hope the people who commented negatively will give her another chance. Life is too short to harbor bad feelings for long.

I know it is too late to help that author now, but for future reference, these are example responses to harsh reviews of a novel:

Thank you so much for reading my novel. I struggle to feed six foster care children and a deadbeat husband which causes me to sometimes get distracted from my writing. I promise to do better in the future. I hope you will give me another chance. I really need the money.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my novel. I am a struggling writer. The fingers on my right hand are shorter than the ones on my left hand. Sometimes things don’t turn out on paper how I saw them in my head. I will be having cosmetic surgery next week to shorten the fingers on my left hand. I hope you will notice a vast improvement in my next novel.

Anyone who wishes to use these responses may do so. Glad I could help.   wink2

:s the review was not bad. The reviewer just pointed out a few mistakes, surely that would help an author. I didn't find anything wrong from the review, there wasn't any harsh words or attacking comments, in fact, it was quite complementary in parts.
The author obviously thinks she is the next literary great and cannot take any criticism whatsoever.

Yeesh.  Maybe I should find my own borderline-psychotic mediocre author to say mildly critical things about.  Then my blog will be famous and maybe I can get something published myself, lol.

Any takers?  wink2

Alright!  You go self-publish something, then I'll politely say I didn't think it was for me, and then you just explode all over my blog with as many F-bombs and Wingdings as you can manage before your keyboard catches fire.  flame  We'll be rich and famous in no time.
