Am I doing the right thing?

I've got a publisher for my novel about a soldier, an Indian and the Sonora Desert. I'm quite pleased with the relationship as we already have a decent cover and an editor who works with Marines. He should understand my MC and his situation. The only problem is that the publisher, XOXO Publishing has a long list of erotic works. It's not really that much of a drawback as it's quite possible the majority of buyers for this novel and its sequel will be guys serving in the military and veterans.

When we first signed the contract, I submitted the first two novels of my Father Serra's Legacy to them and told another publisher that I was withdrawing it from them. But novels about Roman Catholic priests spreading The Word of God to Indians and building their mission in California somehow does not seem to be a good fit for a publisher with a lot of erotic books.

So, after a lot of thought, I contacted the second publisher and asked if they were still interested in the Father Serra Trilogy. Their answer was, "I will send the contract as soon as we receive the manuscript."

So now, I've got two publishers! And, I had to write XOXO to withdraw the submission of the two Father Serra novels. Hopefully, I laid it on very clearly how happy I am with our current efforts and am not withdrawing it for any other reason than how they fit with their list.

Am I stepping on it here? {Bluewood Publishing seems okay with, now to hope XOXO is too.}

Congratulations, lvcabbie!  Two publishers!  They're big boys (or girls) and should realize the whys and wherefores.  Sounds like you're onto something!   Kool-Aid

So, you signed the first contract already and asked them to nullify it?I wonder how that will go seeing they'd gone so far as cooked up the cover already.

I can understand why you'd want to choose the pub whose line seems the best fit. I hope everything turns out well.

NO! NO! NO!

I originally sent two different novels - with their sequels - to several publishers. XOXO liked Sonora Symphony and sent me a contract, which I signed.

I then got several offers for the Father Serra's Legacy Trilogy - which XOXO also had. As I'd signed a contract with them for one book, I wanted to give them the right to accept or turn down the trilogy. They said they'd give me a contract with it as soon as they got to it - it was still in their inbox.

So, I thought it over and felt perhaps XOXO was not the right publisher for the trilogy. Bluewood said they've gladly take it, I notified XOXO who said "go ahead", and then sent it back to Bluewood. Waiting for the contract to arrive.

Oh yeah, the editor assigned by XOXO to Sonora Symphony just sent it to me with some minor grammatical suggestions. Told me to re-read it and sent it back to XOXO. Ill get that done today!

Cool.  XOXO didn't strike me as the right venue for Father Serra's Legacy.  I think you'll be glad you went with Bluewood.  Thumbs Up

Congrats on getting two publishers! toast

Ah, I see... I read the post too fast and got confused.

Best wishes all the same-- I think you made a wise decision.

See my post about trying to keep up.

Got the contract, signed it, filled out the information they asked for - and sent it back TODAY!
