Sharing my experiences with John, so others know what they may expect.

I danced with John for four years before he offered rep. In October of '22 he subbed my novel to five Big Five editors, heard back from one (a pass). Refused to follow up with the rest. I reiterated I am never going to write seven-figure-deal-worthy, accessible, commercial thrillers and if he wasn't confident in me I would find other rep. He stated firmly I didn't have to. He loved my writing and would work hard to get me published, with a large or small house.

At an industry conference in June of 23, John stood me up for a planned get together, and finally gave me twenty minutes as he was checking out of the hotel. I pitched him my new novel, and he was excited about its prospects. Three weeks later he read the first thirty pages and declared it "spectacularly good" and commercially viable.

I sent him the MS in mid-September. He did not respond to subsequent emails, phone calls, or text messages. A few days before Thanksgiving, I ended our relationship via email (we never had a contract). He called me only after I fired him, so we wouldn't end on a sour note. He said he read my novel in September and didn't think he could sell the book and didn't want to have an uncomfortable conversation. He referred me to other prospective agents.

In my eighteen months with John, he subbed one project to five editors and was ghosted by four of them. I have been told by authors with major houses that editors do not ignore agent submissions. How this reflects on John's standing I can't say. He refused to submit my work wider and never offered the kind of detailed editorial guidance some of my newly-agented friends have received from their reps.

Lastly, his communication is atrocious. I spoke with an author who's published thirty-four novels, and they told me John rarely, if ever, responded to them.

I know authors who've had excellent experiences with John. I wasn't one of them. Good luck.
