Title: Which email to use?
Post by: Alniah on September 12, 2011, 04:11:18 PM
I am not ready to query but was wondering.
For my previous novel, I had an extensive exchange (>20 back and forth email) and an R&R request from a specific agent. She was extremely helpful and open to discussion even though she didn't want to represent me. It was great.
So I am wondering. Should I query at the standard submissions@ .... email or query her on the email from which we had been having a long exchange?
(I guess I am hoping our history would set me at least a quarter inch higher than the slush pile)

I'd use the golden email. You have a relationship so it shouldn't be a problem.

Back door/bat phone/hotline. Use every advantage you have. You guys have a relationship of sorts. Capitalize on that. Good luck!

Use a portkey, if possible.  >:D

I personally dislike very much long chain of emails, so I'll go with a new one, but remind her in the beginning that you exchanged previously. My two cents.

Oh, I totally agree with ClaudeDancourt. Don't query as a reply to past emails. Start a new one, but use the "private" email address.

I agree as well that a fresh new email with this agent is absolutely the way to go.  With 20 email exchanges between you, she'll certainly know who you are.  Good luck!

Thanks guys! I thought that ya'll were gonna say the submsission email. We all know how gung-ho our dear agents are with their submission guidelines

I was thinking. What subject line should I use? I am afraid that if I put the word query she is going to delete it instantly thinking I am an author that did not follow the submission guidelines.

Also, what would ya'll think about asking her how to query future projects through twitter?

Perhaps: Resubmission: New Project - Title/genre

I would not bug her on Twitter. Others might think differently.

I agree with Mary on the email title. Personally, I wouldn't Twitter on this one.

Personally, when I was subbing a new project to someone with whom I'd have a long correspondence, I emailed to that address, replying to that thread. I know others have said differently and I don't mean to confuse, but I've had success with that more than once and I think it's best that they not have to guess at their previous enthusiasm. Just my two cents.

Yes. Why make the agent work to remember? And as for Twitter. No. And I'd title it UPDATE, revision on TITLE, as Requested or discussed-- or something like that.

But this is a brand new project, yes? Not related to the other one. If she invited you to query her again with a different project, perhaps keep that particular email in the loop, but I wouldn't respond by keeping a string of 20 correspondences regarding a project she rejected in the past in the query for a new one.
