THE GREAT NORTHWEST [SDP] -- Years ago, Robert A. Heinlein thrilled millions of younger readers with his YA novels filled with adventures among the stars. Remember The Star Beast? Citizen of the Galaxy? Podkayne of Mars? Starman Jones?

Now comes a YA novel from Marva Dasef that is surely the adventurous equal of those long-ago tales. First Duty is the story of Nyra Hutchings, a young woman born into a life of servitude on a repressive factory planet, who is desperate for a different life. When she's accepted into the Space Service Academy, run by the organization that enslaves her planet, she discovers the truth behind generations of rebellion. Now, she must decide what to believe, where her first duty lies, and fight for more than her life against impossible odds.

Marva Dasef lives in Eugene, Oregon, with her husband and a fat cat. She has dabbled in a variety of genres, with fantasy, science fiction, romance, literary, children's, and historical fiction published in a variety of on-line and print magazines. First Duty is her breakout into longer fiction.

My publisher is sending me a bunch of copies so I can sell them autographed.  If you're serious, Lee, PM me to work something out.  I think I'll put a PayPal button on my website to handle payments, etc.  I've got to figure out what the s/h should be for this size book (150 pages).  The Genre Mall sells it for $7.70 plus $4.00 S/H, so I could do the same.

My mystery/suspense/romance novel, Lady Gabriella just became available on Amazon yesterday.

Although the description was added today, the image hasn't been uploaded yet to Amazon. Will be within the next week.

It's due to hit Barnes & Nobles online soon, then I'll be able to do signings.

To check out the book illustrations for Lady Gabriella, I have it posted on myspace. www.myspace.com/storycreater

Here's a description of what the story is about:

Nicole Valentine:

Since the day she became heiress of a rare, British locket worth millions, her life was cast into a pitfall of treachery and deceit. She would soon come face to face with a demon from her past: a deadly conspiracy contrived long ago by those who will stop at nothing to claim her treasure. As fate would have it, there is only one man who can save her life.

Detective Dalton:

Hired to discover the whereabouts of an ancient locket stolen from his client, Detective Dalton was determined to bring the culprit down. Despite the fact that this raven-haired beauty was weakening his resolve, it was his job to find out where she was keeping the valuable heirloom she'd stolen. As one grisly detail in the case begins to unfold after another, and an innocent life hangs in the balance, he is forced to decide who is the hunter and who is the prey.

All right.  I can't help but crow a bit.

My "Tales of a Texas Boy" (Large Print editions) have made #1 on Books/Large Print/Poetry and Short Stores AND #2 on Books/Large Print/Literature and Fiction AND #2 in Kindle Store > Kindle Books > Fiction > Children's Fiction > Animals > Farm Animals

These are lists on Amazon if you do a search.  Now, the likelihood of searching in those specific categories aren't huge, but if a person buys a Large Print book, they notice what else is connected to the book in the same categories.

It's hard to explain, but suffice it to say that these are very good listings to have.  They are spectacular listings for a self-pubbed book.

I'm a total newbie to the forum but I've been hanging around the main QT site for about a year.

I have two historical fiction novels  published.  CHASING BYRON (Highland Press, June 2008) and UNHEARD MELODIES: CONFESSIONS OF A POETIC MUSE (Wings Press, August 2008).  UNHEARD MELODIES was nominated or "Best Book of 2008" at Long and Short Reviews.

LONG AND SHORT REVIEW says of CHASING BYRON:  I can’t say enough good things about Ms. Zenk’s writing. Chasing Byron is a page turner of a book not only because of the engaging characters but also by the lovely prose. In fact, I read the entire thing in one day. Reading this book was a jolly fun time all through the eyes of Miss Woodhouse, yet also one that touches the heart. It was an experience I would definitely repeat. I’m almost jealous of Ms. Zenk. She must have had a glorious time penning this story. As this is her debut novel, I hope we will be delighted with more stories from this talented author in the future.     *The full review can be found at http://www.longandshortreviews.com/LASR/0608/ChasingByron-MZ.htm

LONG AND SHORT REVIEWS has named UNHEARD MELODIES a Best Book.  A Best Book is "a book or story that is truly exceptional. You think about it when you're not reading it. You wonder what happens to the characters when you finish. You would absolutely buy everything else this author had to offer. The highest praise - and reserved for only a few."  They go on to say:  Rarely have I ever been brought to tears by a novel as I was after reading this story. Ms. Zenk has produced a shining gem to be proud of for years and years to come.  As I read this book, I was tempted to cheat and look up how the story would unfold but instead I continued to read and was rewarded by one of the most heart-touching stories I've read in a very long time. Unheard Melodies was also nominated for BEST BOOK OF THE WEEK and BEST BOOK OF 2008 awards in the Long and Short Reviews reader polls.  *The full review can be found at  http://www.longandshortreviews.com/LASR/1108/UnheardMelodiesConfessions-MZ.htm

Both are available on Amazon, B&N or through the publishers websites.

Warrior's Duty
By: J. R. Tomlin; published by Swimming Kangaroo Books
Available from Amazon.com

When war comes to Wayfare Keep, Tamra has to fight, in every sense, to survive.

Tamra is the Captain of the Guard of Wayfare Keep and nothing can distract her from her duty -- which is why she has joined her forces those of Sir Cedrian and the army of the city of Madrian to defend their land against invading enemies. When their army is routed and most of her people killed, she is shattered.

Even worse lies ahead as the secrets of her past come to light. Each death in battle only makes their enemy stronger, allowing the enemy priests to summon invincible demons called ixich. Yet in their darkest hour, haunted by loss and with defeat imminent, Tamra and her allies call upon their deepest strengths to survive and triumph.

A sample chapter is available at: http://www.jeannetomlin.com/

Or order it from: http://www.amazon.com/Warriors-Duty-J-R-Tomlin/dp/1934041270

Not sure how I missed this thread!  I guess I've been too self-absorbed. I think most of the QT world knows about my book "Who Got Liz Gardner" which was self-published in April and is available on a variety of online booksellers.  Here's the link for amazon:

And the latest excitement was this review last Monday by a real critic: http://www.dirtysexybooks.com/Dirty_Sexy_Books/Reviews/Entries/2009/8/10_WHO_GOT_LIZ_GARDNERBY_ELIZABETH_ALLEN2009.html

and said critic requested an interview which will be posted soon!

Thanks to Patrick and QT, I found an agent who landed me a publishing deal.

My book is called Four Word Film Reviews and it comes out in August of 2010 from Adams Media.  The title says it all -- the book sums up movies in four words or less.

Here are a few examples:

THE HANGOVER (2009)
"What happened in Vegas?"
"Beer, loathing, Las Vegas."

JURASSIC PARK (1993)
"T-Rex isle dysfunction."
"Visitors feed the animals."
"Look Back In Amber."
"Experiment with dino sours."
"Site for ’saur rise."

IRON MAN (2008)
"Robot Downey Jr."
"Downey's surprisingly well cast."
"Superhero's a little rusty."

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)
"Heath Ledger's clowning glory."
"An unbalanced Ledger."
"Ledger's last laugh."

THE DA VINCI CODE (2006)
"Hanks: You've Got Grail."
"Seize the (Opus) Dei."
"Greatest Story Never Told."

You can order the book on Amazon by clicking here: http://www.amazon.com/Four-Word-Film-Reviews-Clews/dp/1440505659/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264509883&sr=8-1

SECRETS OF THE COLD WAR
US Army Europe's Intelligence & Counterintelligence activities against the Soviets during the Cold War
Author: Leland C. McCaslin
Imprint:
Helion & Company Ltd
Extent: 248pp
Illustrations: c 100 b/w photos, 2 maps
Format: 234mm x 156mm
Binding: Hardback
ISBN: 978-1-906033-91-0
Price:£19.95
Publication date: August 2010
Description:

'Secrets of the Cold War' focuses on a dark period of a silent war and offers a new perspective on the struggle between the superpowers of the world told in the words of those who were there. The author, formerly an expert in counterintelligence in US Army Europe, weaves together exciting true accounts of allies collecting enemy information in the East and fighting spies and terrorist in the West.

Amassing Soviet military information by Allied agents in the East is at the forefront! Learn the bizarre method a British agent uses to obtain the muzzle size of a Russian tank as he risks his life jumping on a moving train in East Germany. A French officer drives into a Soviet tank column and escapes undiscovered by cunning methods. In West Germany, terrorist attacks and spies are rampant. Communists shoot a rocket propelled grenade into a General's occupied limo and terrorists kidnap another General. From the espionage files, an American soldier is nearly recruited in a downtown bar to be a spy and a First Sergeant is lured by sex to be an unknowing participant in spying.

Behind-the-lines images are historic and intriguing. See photographs of a French officer and a Soviet officer relaxing in the East German woods in a temporary unofficial peace; 'James Bond' type cars with their light tricks and their ability to leave their Stasi shadows 'wheel spinning' in the snow will amaze readers.

Russian translator for the presidential hotline recounts a story about having to lock his doors in the Pentagon, separating himself and his sergeant from the Pentagon Generals when a message comes in from the Soviets. When he called the White House to relay the message to the President and stood by for a possible reply to the Soviet Chairman, he stopped working for the Generals and started working solely for the President.

In another riveting account, a US Berlin tank unit goes on red alert when the Soviets stop a US convoy on the autobahn between West Germany and Berlin. The Berlin Command orders the tanks to rescue them, "If anything gets in your way, either run over it or blow it away!" Young US Berlin train commanders recount their encounters with their Soviet counterparts aboard the Berlin Duty Train. In an unusual train incident, one male Soviet Officer places a love note in a young US female Train Commander's pocket, touching her leg. The note is in the book.

Containing a host of first-person accounts that lift the lid on previously untold clandestine activities, this is a major contribution to Cold War history, and exciting reading for all those who have an interest in the real-life world of military intelligence, counterintelligence and espionage.

Francis Gary Powers, Jr: "Well written and informative, the book is a magnificent assessment of the Cold War history."

Retired four Star General Kroesen, of US Army Europe: "Given the criticism, bad news and alleged malfeasances associated with our intelligence services during the past decade, it is most refreshing to find a book relating a far different story."

My SFR Ultimate Duty was released in November from Eternal Press.

It's a revision into an R-rating on my SF (the first one I posted in this thread), First Duty.

I also just released another rewrite/reprint of a book that just ran out on its contract. The old book: The Seven Adventures of Cadida. The new book: The Tales of Abu Nuwas.

MuseItUp publishing has purchased all my books that agents sneered at. Well, maybe they didn't really sneer; it only felt like it. The first one is a suspense/mystery titled "Missing, Assumed Dead" scheduled for July 2011. In October 2011, the first book in my Witches of Galdorheim series, "Bad Spelling," will be released. I know that the other two book have been accepted, but the release dates aren't scheduled yet.

My website has everything posted with links and covers.

How to Get a Literary Agent In Two Murders or Less

Aspiring novelist Amanda Anderson has never had any luck, but she hopes that's about to change. She goes to a writer's conference to find an agent, but ends up with a husband. After a whirlwind courtship, she elopes with bestselling suspense writer Jonny Goodsnuff. But she soon discovers that her husband's only good on paper. Between a draconian prenup, his sleazy associates, her wicked stepchildren, and the hunky romance-novelist neighbor, Amanda learns the meaning of "wed in haste, repent at leisure." Unfortunately Jonny has a deadly secret, and before she can walk away, Amanda finds herself in a desperate game of cat and mouse. But who are the cats? And who are the mice? And most importantly, will any of this bring her closer to a publishing contract?

Thanks, Liz.  It will teach you the one surefire way to instant bestsellerdom.  Unfortunately, it only works when someone dies...

And you could be the next to go.

Hey all! After enjoying two successful nonfiction titles, and trying (unsuccessfully) to make the leap into YA fiction, I have finally sold my series to a small press in a 4-book deal. The first book, a novella called DIES IRAE comes out next week, and the novel (LACRIMOSA) is out in March. WOOT!

I haven't been here in a very long time, but with the release coming up, I just wanted to come by and announce it. Hopefully this won't get deleted. I haven't been about of late, but I used to be a big haunter of these boards. :)

My debut, Blood Rage, comes out on Wednesday from Evernight Publishing.

I owe a lot of people here a great deal of thanks (Pilot first and foremost, though it looks like he hasn't been around for a few months). Got great help with my original query, the opening (heck, the whole danged thing). It was called Choices, then Love & Lies, and then finally, Blood Rage.

Sophie possesses the rare ability to reduce the spiritual damage that causes a demivamp to Fall, making her the only thing that stands between a DV and evolution. Oooo do I get to be the first 2013 post?  ;D My historical romance To Trust a Thief was just released from Entangled Scandalous on Jan 20th. It's available on Amazon and B&N. Here's the blurb :)

Minuette Sinclair thought her biggest problem was getting out of her aunt’s finishing school a proper Victorian lady. But her parents are in trouble and her fake fiancé is too. A legendary lost necklace might be their salvation, and Min is determined to find it and use it to buy her family and fiancé out of their misfortunes.

Unexpected competition in the form of master thief Bryant Westley has Min tripping over her own feet to get to the treasure first. Desperate, she can’t refuse Bryant’s offer to partner up in the search – even though she knows she can’t trust him. Things become more complicated when Min realizes that her convenient engagement means more to her fake fiancé than her. Worse, she’s in love with Bryant, a distraction she can’t afford. Besides, if she can’t trust him with the treasure, how can she trust him with her heart?

FINALLY: I get to post on the QT bookshelf!

I'm Nancy Allen. My novel, The Code of the Hills: An Ozarks Mystery, will be released by HarperCollins on Tuesday, April 15. It comes out as an e-book on 4/15 ($2.99) and on May 20, it will be available in paperback ($7.99). It is a legal thriller set in the Missouri Ozarks and starring prosecutor Elsie Arnold, who is assigned a high-profile sex case, riddled with holes. To win the case, she'll have to break "the code of the hills."

This has been a long journey, fellow writers. I started writing the book 5 years ago, and on the road to publication, I spent many hours poring over the QueryTracker website. QT helped me find my first agent, and my second. The third try was the charm: my current & wonderful agent, Jill Marr of the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, secured the deal with HarperCollins.

I encourage everyone to keep following the dream and fighting the good fight. With enough persistence and hard work, you can achieve that goal. I did!
