Title: Agent Suggestions?
Post by: alison_face on January 08, 2014, 12:36:24 PM
I've been querying like crazy (a few full requests but no real luck yet) and I was wondering if anyone here might know of a specific agent who is interested in medical health-related fiction.  Specifically a novel about Alzheimer's disease? I've been checking manuscript wishlists but haven't seen anything yet...perhaps someone has seen someone in their travels?

I already queried Meg Ruley (agent of Lurlene McDaniel--medical fiction) and Theresa Park (agent of Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook) but Meg passed and Theresa was a non-responder.

Thanks!

Alison

aww sorry, i'm mostly just familiar with agents who rep fantasy horror and YA.

Have you checked the who reps whom feature and looked for who reps authors of similar books?

And how "medical?" Are we talking All the Dancing Birds or are we talking about a Robin Cook type thing?

Thanks for replying, everyone!

Falen: I've tried, but I haven't been able to come up with much fiction.  Most of the ALZ texts are memoir.

TerryRodgers: Whoops, sorry, I should have included that! It's literary fiction with romance elements.

MookyMcD: I'd say it's more like All the Dancing Birds.

Well, some comp authors (their books would mention their agents in the Acknowledgment sections) are:

Lisa Genova (Still Alice is about early-onselt Alzheimers and maybe her second book is too?)
Michelle Wildgen (You're Not You is about Lou Gehrig's/ALS)
Jodi Picoult (approximately five gazillion books, many of which are medical issues related, such as My Sister's Keeper)
Jennifer Haigh (The Condition is about some kind of inherited disease)
Joseph Monninger (Eternal on the Water is about Huntington's -- his agent is/was Christina Hogrebe)

If you do Amazon checks for any of those, they would likely lead you to "You might also like" results, and you could amass quite a list of comp titles and check all those agents.

Good luck!!

Thank you, Midwest!  Those will help me out a lot, I'll see what I can find out tonight.  I actually already have a query out to Christina Hogrebe, so maybe I'll have some luck there!

You can find a category called "medical novels" on Goodreads. It had a slew of books (not surprisingly, about half are by RC). It's probably worthwhile for some of the comps, though.
