Same here - Googled an agent and found a link to the site.  'Tis the beginning of a potentially remarkable resource - job well done!

Hi Miss Java, welcome aboard.  Is this the same Miss Java that runs "Coffee Break for Writers?"  Must be, after all, how many Miss Javas can there be?  Either way, welcome.

By the way, I haven't seen much activity on your blog, I hope that means that you've been so busy with your novel that you just haven't had the time to blog.   :write:

It's true!  I have actually been working on my manuscript.

So if you see me post a lot, you might want to nag me and tell me to get back to work!  More than likely it means I am procrastinating.

Cool place

I found QueryTracker on Google. Looks like this site is a great idea. Over time, it should generate some interesting statistics and provide some help to all of us writers trying to get our stories published.

Literary agents seem to be a little picky, when it comes to evaluating prose. I apparently have an example of a Worst Query to submit later. Maybe some of the users can tell me what's wrong with my query. All I ever get back from the agents is: Are you serious?

Keep up the good work. I couldn't figure out to paste the little yellow smiling clapping hands thing up above this box. I'm clapping for you anyway.

I was looking to see how easy/difficult it would be to find an agent and there you were. Really cool website! I haven't even written my manuscript yet. What I have written is scattered across a pile of index cards. This information is encouraging because I have the attention span equivalent to the life cycle of a frog.

Welcome, tammy and all new members!  We hope you find QT as helpful as the rest of us, and we really hope it helps you in your quest for publication.  Remember to enter in that data as you query, and share your experiences with the community on the Forum.  New exciting tools are going to be available on QT soon, and we will take any suggesions you have for things you would like to see.  Of course, we may not be able to implement things like "Live agent chat," (hard enough to get them to read a letter!) but we will do our best to implement reasonable suggestions.  Welcome again, and enjoy the site!!

I have that "Selective Memory Syndrome," but I do think I discovered QueryTracker through StumbleUpon---which is an incredible place to visit, spend time, learn, share, and become inspired.

I'm a writer/artist/editor. It took me one year to track down an amazing agent who takes new authors under his wing(s) and nurtures them. I'm now an active member of his writing group where I am work-shopping my novel. The agent's feedback has fuelled me; this class with its membership of authors has helped me grow while allowing me to maintain my voice. Now I'm here. I look forward to sharing and new outcomes.

Wait...what agent...what website? Is that a sort of thing you have to pay for or does the agent agree to rep you then work with you. You've piqued my interest.

Hi. I'm brand new and this is my first post (to any site, so bear with me if I make any mistakes!) The QT link was forwarded to my online crit group by one of our members. She found QT by googling the name of one of our past members who was recently published. (Her name is mentioned here under the Who Reps Who.) I've told everyone in the crit group how great this site is so hopefully you'll get more members soon -- I know one of them has already joined. We all write MG or YA.

I found a link to QT from Write Water. I found Write Water when I read that an agent told an author that his was the best query he'd ever read, and that he had gotten help at that site. And I found that author's comment when I googled "best queries."

So, that's the chain of events that led me to Query Tracker.

Thanks for the welcome, folks.  By way of introduction, I am a male in my sixties, with a professional background in advertising and public relations in Dallas, Texas.  I have written a memoir (love letters from my father to my mother during WW2) which I self-published for my extended family.

Last fall I completed a 100k word novel that probably falls in the "cmmercial fiction" genre and started my query process in November.  I generally looked for agencies that would accept some sample pages with the requisite query letter.  To date -- 58 submissions -- 43 rejections -- 14 pending? -- and on July 02, 2007 a request from the Howard Morhaim Agency a full manuscript.  Someone has suggested August in "downtime," they weren't kidding.

This is my first attempt at fiction, if you don't count ad copy or press releases.  I am anxious to see how all this plays out.

 Yay!!! Stick around please!!! I'm tired of being the elder stateswoman on here!!!

Wow...I just love that self-publish idea of yours. I have a friend who is a Swiss immigrant and who came after WW2 to the US and she wants to self-publish her memoirs for her family as well. What a wonderful, wonderful gift for your family. Good luck with your fiction. If you want to post an excerpt or your first five pages, I will be happy to look.

I hadn't heard of these yet, but then it follows, my being a newbie. Is that something you earn or just get and give at random. And, what do you get when you accumulate karma points? A pat on the back? LOL

Thanks for the welcome and the karma point.

Post by: Patrick on October 17, 2007, 02:27:24 PM
Hi Paul,
Karma is only good for bragging rights, none refundable, no cash value.  Anyone can hand it out (after they have accumulated a set number of posts .  But I can't remember what that number is right now, but it's low.  Something like 5.)  Once you reach the number of posts, on the left side of the screen below everyone's name will be links for Applaud and Smite.  If someone does something good (like critique your query or say something inspiring or funny), you can applaud them and their karma goes up.  If someone does something bad, you smite them and their karma goes down.  But that never happens around here.

Oh, I see Lannie cleared up the question of number of posts required.  She knows more about this site than I do.

I'm not sure, but I think I might have smited Lannie yesterday.  :( If you are missing a point, Lannie it was from me. I'm sorry! I scrolled down to hit "next page" real quick, and I think I might have missed. Here, I'll give you two karma to make up for it. ;D

When I found QueryTracker, I was actually searching the Web looking for a real job. I'm a tech writer, so things were coming up under "writer." I found this site and joined a couple days before my last contract ended.

It's been two months, and I still haven't found anything in terms of a day job. In the intervening time, however, I at least managed to pen a new novel. (Now if I could just get someone to pay me cash for one of my wordbabies....)

Hello!  I've been using Query Tracker for about 3-4 months and became a premium member this month, and decided to check out the Forum and other features.  I believe I found query tracker while googling an agent and the link led me to QT!  I have found several new agents I didn't see at WritersMarket.com, which is very good too, and have gotten requests from my query letter - more about that elsewhere.  I'm writing historical novels and reading them voraciously as well.  Nice to be part of a community....

I can't remember if I heard about QT on AbsoluteWrite or Backspace. When I first saw it, I was in the middle of pleading with a friend of mine to write me query tracking software and I pointed to QT as a place that had "most" of what I wanted. Hello, I am Wiggypop's sister.  (See her post above)  I learned about this site from a new agent on the scene, Kate Shafer of kt literary based in Colorado.  Her website is http://www.ktliterary.com/daphne.html .

Right now another agent, Laurie McLean of Larsen Pomada Agency, has my full ms.  She requested an exclusive, which I granted, but the exclusive has expired and I haven't heard back from her yet.

I actually almost landed an agent a few months ago, but we didn't share the same vision for my middle grade novel.  He wanted me to make some changes I felt uncomfortable with, so we parted ways.

And then I found QueryTracker, and love it!  What an amazing resource.   :)

Hi Suzy, welcome.

Thanks for the news about being referred by KT.  Agents are starting to take notice of QT, which is very exciting.

I have the honor of giving you your first karma  ;D (someone usually beats me to it, but not this time people :wag:)

Good luck with your agent search.

I was referred by a dear friend, who assured me, the last time I visited her in the psychiatric ward, that the level of literary wit and repartee here rivaled that of the legendary Algonquin Round Table. (She's not scheduled for release anytime soon.)

I'm trying to remember where I saw Query Tracker referenced. I belong to so many groups now, thanks to my publishers (LOL) I can't keep track of it all. I think it was the Romance Writers of America Online Chapter, but just after I joined I also saw someone mention it on the RWA PRO loop. In fact, the member who mentioned suggest we should all use it, because of the stats that are available...obviously the more users the more relevant the stats are.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. And thank you for the karma, Suzy_Q.  I'm rather glad about the mix-up, this seems like a fun and informative forum. I'm happy to have found it.

As to who is the bizarro Bettie, joanjunkmail, I'm not sure. Ms Bettie Swift (née Sharpe) is not shy about her opinions, but for the past two years, I've been writing love stories about bad girls and very bad boys who get several happy endings before they get to happily ever after. Romance is ever the red-headed step-child of genre fiction, so that alone probably makes me the evil bettie.  ;D

I found QT when I began searching for agents to query.  I ended up abandoning any other source for my information.  Anything I wanted could be found through QT.  I attribute the fact I got an agent for my YA paranormal while maintaining my sanity to this site.  Amen for this amazing tool.  I've met a few cool friends through it, too.

You can find out more about how QT helped me in my successful (thank goodness) quest for an agent through my QT success story interview.

Thanks, Patrick!

Hi Patrick,
It's kind of a blur now, but I think I found QT from Agent Query.com one month ago. I am so impressed and relieved to have found such an amazing site. Being a new writer with all the fears, confusion and anxiety that comes with, QT and this forum was like finding a best friend to help me along ( and a smart one too!)

How do I attach an avatar to my profile?  I can't seem to figure that one out yet!

Hi Chicklitterbug,
As a fearful, confused, and anxious newbie myself, I will heartily agree that the support and information on this site is fantastic.
In regards to the avatars, I'm fairly sure us newbies won't have access to one until we've hit 25 posts (I'm nearly there  :) ), at which point it will be from a pre-selected list.  After 50 posts or so we get to choose our own, so it's nice to have a goal.

Thanks Saau and welcome to you as well!  What's your genre and are you having success so far with your queries?
Mine is a hybrid of narrative memoir/ chick lit ( thus the moniker).

Chicklitterbug - I'm working in mythic fiction at the moment and really enjoying playing around with this genre so I think that's where I'll be staying for a good long time.  :)
As for success with queries, I must admit that I haven't quite been game enough to send any out yet.   :emb:  I feel my MS needs just one more edit and polish (I'm not procrastinating, really...  Lol), and then I'll get stuck into the agents.  I've been held up a bit because I've just moved from Australia to England, which you can imagine has been a bit of a nightmare.  But as soon as I'm in my own place I'll be able to give it the time it deserves.

And Maryl, I must ask what this 'normal' thing is and do we really want to go there?

Hi.  I found query tracker by googling for articles about how to write a query.  I feel that I lucked out!  I have been using the website for about a month, and it has enabled me to send out many more queries than I would have otherwise.  And it's a great way to keep track of what I have sent.  I thank you so much - also, thank you for making a free version - I will subscribe once I'm no longer a poor unpublished author  :)

I am happy to see so many new members, but at the same time I'm a bit sad about it because, in the beginning, I was able to meet each new member and get to know them.  I spent a lot of time on the forum and made lots of great friends.  Unfortunately, with the success of QueryTracker came lots more work and now I just don't have the time to keep up with everyone, and that really makes me sad.  But, darn it, I'm going to make an effort to get to know more of you.  After all, who needs sleep?

A helpful friend through the Vail Daily heard of my really bad experience with last agent (whom I've since fired) turned me on to another site.  I asked Writer's Beware if they'd heard of it and they recommended Query Tracker.

I heard about QT about two months ago from a member of my writing group.  Then a few weeks back there was buzz about it on my online writer's workshop forum (OWW for Sci-fi, fantasy, and horror)...finally, one of the blogs I subscribe (Miss Snark's first victim) had a link and so here I am.

I LOVE the searchable interface.  Wish I'd come across this months ago when I started putting together a query list from other sites.

Sad thing is, QT's advance search list only has about 10 more agents than I already had on my personal list.  I had hoped I wasn't that thorough in my previous search, but apparently I was.

I heard about Query Tracker through a writing critique partner. We have an awesome group, by the way. Two of us are finalists in Dorchester Publishing and Romantic Times' American Title V contest. The winner gets a publishing contract. Check it out at www.romantictimes.com/news_amtitle.php  The public gets to vote for their favorite entry. Since finaling, I've been querying quite a bit more. I've gotten requests for partials, but no takers yet. 58 rejections to date. Ah well. I'll keep at it! -Barbara Longley

Hi, guys!

I have been using Query Tracker for about three weeks now, and have to say it's the best tool I could have ever invisioned for querying agents.  I had been using my own "query log" which was just a big, messy, horrible Word doc.  Bless you all for making life so easy!  The comments and the reports are invaluable.

I found out about this site from the Pacific Northwest Writer's Association site.  I just finished my first fantasy novel at 92,000 words, and am beginning the exciting/mortifying journey of querying .  Good times!

I found QueryTracker because I sent out a query to my dream agent (Jodi Reamer) and she asked for a partial, but I wanted to find out how long she took to reply to other partials (and I couldn't find the info anywhere else). So I googled and found QueryTracker, which is perfect and exactly what I was looking for! Once I hear back (or don't, as I hear that sometimes can be the case!), I plan to use it to track all of my queries.

I went through the bother of compiling my own MS Access Database to do all the things that QT does and then Googled in an agents name to get more information that I couldn't find in "2009 Guide to Literary Agents"
Wallah!
Wow! QT makes it all so easy...after I did all that work!  :'(
I still keep the database and use it as a supplement to QT.
I couldn't let all that work go to waste
But really QT is great and I am glad I found it.

Hello all.  New user, just getting started with QT, but an old writing hand seeking my first published novel.  I found QueryTracker through Google.  I'm very pleased with the site and use it daily, but still getting a feel for all it offers.  In the past week I've blitzed 25 selected agents on one project with 2 requests for partials and 12 rejects.  I figure an approx. 10% interest is not bad stats for this business.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  Thanks, QT for a great site!

Looks like I put the cart before the horse and posted a query--very green, and well, pretty awful--before I introduced myself.  I tend to jump in sometimes without checking the water first.

I've caught the writing bug and though I've not published anything yet, I'm feverishly writing and ever hopeful.

Anyhow, I've already learned so much in such a short time.  Thank God for Yahoo! Search engine!

Thanks to everyone for their tips, opinions, and support!  I'm glad to be a part of the action here!

Hopefully my writing will soon be brushed up enough so that it can see the light of day!  I'm chomping at the bit to get back out there!   :ride:

Oooh time to stop being shy, so this is as good a place as any to start.

I became aware of Query tracker from word of mouth (text of fingers?) from an old friend.  He actually gave me several links to help find suitable publishers or agents, and to help with the process, but at a brief glance this site looked to be the most promising.  Only time and investigation will tell if it is as good as it looks.  I hope it is.  I haven't fully explored QT yet, but so far so good!

Please, let us know how you found QueryTracker.net.

Hi Patrick :)!

Yoshi97 at Storywrite.com referred me to QueryTracker.  The information I've been receiving from members today has been very good, I believe.  I've decided to upgrade my membership, today.

I've been a member at QueryTracker.net for quite sometime.  Probably around a year, but never active.  The novel Geri Fitzsimmons and I have been working on for a year and nine months now, is too important to screw up with.  I'm going to turn down the offer of my friend's POD, though I hate doing so.

I feel that QueryTracker will justify itself now that we're ready to begin serious marketing.

What is the Karma rating about at the Avatar and how is it used?

I clicked the stars beneath your name.  I didn't notice anything else.  Blind maybe.

I donated to Heather's Animations and she sent me twenty-five personalized gifs.  For some sites, I have to convert them to jpgs for them to work.  I usually just use the jpg versions as they tend to work universally.

You have to donate about twelve dollars or more.  I donated twenty-four USD.

I've got a lot more exploring and learning to do at QueryTrackers.  Thanks for explaining.  I don't think I've done much with my profile, yet.

Its kind of a long story but here it goes.

I was looking at books online (i know i'm a total nerd) and i stumbled across THE HOLLOW by Jessica Verday. I went to her website to find out more about her book and she recommended QT for writers who are looking to be published. By the way if you are into YA ghost stories look her up. Her book rocks!

I was reading this post on some agent's website, and I liked what he wrote. Linton Robinson said two words about Query Tracker: "Consider This."

And so I did. So far, I like it. There is a distinctly more professional feel to this site as compared to others I have frequented. It's refreshing to be among people who can actually write.

Sorry if that sounds cheeky, but how many times can I read about someone who was picked on in their childhood or wronged by an errant lover? Most "writers" on other sites are more interested in writing for their diary than for publication.

Too much navel-gazing and not enough story-telling.

I stumbled into QT when I was doing a google search for info on ms formatting.  Looks like a useful site and I look forward to joining the community.

I've not explored every corner yet, but it would be helpful to a nuts and bolts section like that.  I run into major problems on how/where to break scenes/chapters, etc.  Also have found that every agent has their own little set of rules - to use Courier12 or not...that is the question.  I've read everything from absolutely MUST, to absolutely NOT as you will be taken for the amateur you are.

I started reading Query Tracker last December, and learned about this forum just today.  Suzette Saxton invited me to check out Query Tracker from another site, I believe.  Since there is so much great information on the main site, I just had to check out this forum.  I have written my first teen mystery novel, and have been looking for a good agent.  My best to everyone here.

HI all, I've been a reclusive writer forever.  My only dialogues have been with editors of four niche novels I've published under a pen name with two small indies who don't work with agents.  I'm now trying to find an agent for two mysteries.  A very tough road, I must say.  So for the first time I looked for a writing support group and found SheWrites.  From there I got here - and I must say it has been very helpful, making the querying process far less painful.  Regards to you all, Ruth

What a great space!  I think I found the site originally when doing a Google search on query letters.  I'll post a much-revised-but-still-crappy-probably query for a YA contemporary soon and am trying to offer advice to query posts that haven't gotten a lot of response.  Hopefully it will be useful to someone!

Well, I found QueryTracker when a couple of well known YA writers chose to follow my blog for networking purposes. They left an initial comment on a post I that wrote last year about writing a query letter. Eventually I checked out the blog that they referred to and became a follower of the blog.

I started exploring the various links on the blog when I decided to try to get published the normal way (expiremented with self-pubbing) and soon found this particular database to my liking. I plan on doing a little more exploring and will start getting down to the nitty gritty of submitting, but so far, I like what I see here.

My sister. She's been on QT for months, and I've been peeking over her shoulder. I finally decided to crawl out of the shadows in which my book and I have been lurking and officially join the writing community. Time to take a more active role in the publishing process, rather than just laughing at my sister for attempting such a folly without connections in the query world.

Besides, I'll be beating my head against the wall if she publishes first because of wisdom gained on QT, lol!  :bang:

It's been six months since I started using QT, and I don't remember how I found it! Yikes! So much writing/publishing research went into finding all the literary sites I'm now a regular on. I've just recently started using the forums, though. It's been incredibly helpful!

Google search for "websites for writers" and it's been a fantastic resource since Day #1.  The input from other writers who have been there and done that was invaluable.  Thanks to great QT members, I defined and improved my MS, developed an effective query letter and synopsis and as a result signed with an agent who "gets" and loves my story.  BTW, I got the agent's info off QT.

I receive messages from various writing websites, read someone's blog on how to query, which lead me to Query Tracker. Seems like a great site and much easier to navigate than the clunky Writer's Market. --- though WM has many more listings. Your tracking is great and I like that I can store a copy of actual letters sent.   Thanks!

Managed to find it in a few ways -

1) folks over at AWWC mentioned it

2) Discovered it while I was looking for agents to query..and boom...query tracker was one of the first search options to pop up.

Couldn't be happier that I discovered it.

Hello to everyone here and thank you all for the wonderful community   I read many posts here before joining. I have published a good deal of nonfiction with some major houses and do not need an agent for that because of my day job (it's relevant to my nonfiction). Recently, I finished a novel and feel like a fish out of water. The fiction world seems impenetrable at times, but thanks to Writer's Market and Query Tracker I sent some queries. I will post separately with some questions.

My trip was circuitous (Glad there is a spell check).  I was researching various authors that were maybe similar, trying to discover their agent by looking in the acknowledgements, then doing a web search for that person in hopes of locating an agent.  It was becoming an arduous task, that was going to be a serious time sink.  But, in one of the searches for a particular agent, this site popped up as one of the text strings.  So, here I am, serendipity I guess....Fitz

Hi,

Copy the section from your MS that you'd like to post here on the forum.  I'm assuming you know how to highlight material in black, then select 'copy'.

Start a new thread here (new topic) in the forum you want to post in.  Put your cursor in the empty big block where you want your text, then select paste from the same 'edit' pulldown that you were at when you selected 'copy'.

Preview your post.  It's likely you will need to do some work to it since it likely appeared as one big block.  Go through and indent your paragraphs and also put an empty space between them so your work will be easier to read.

If later you realize you'd like to fix something in your posted work, when you are viewing your post, in the upper right you will see 'modify'.  Click on that and it will allow you to make tweaks and such to your posted work.  Click 'save' when you are done.

I did a google search to find out how to go about this business of querying literary agents and came across query tracker. Originally, I only used it to find agents, but then quickly realized that QTs tracking method is more efficient than my own. Plus, it has the added benefit of seeing how other people handle the process. I'm very glad I found this tool.

That's not to say that I don't still feel pretty lost, but hey, now I'm less lost than before at least.

Found it on google. Was going nuts trying to stay organized and QT was perfect!  Only question I have is why the genre PARANORMAL is missing. Read recently there is a difference between paranormal and fantasy, but fantasy is the only genre showing. So, sent my queries to those agents interested in fantasy, but not sure if mine fits that well. What to do?
Title: Re: How did you find QueryTracker?
Post by: Patrick on January 26, 2016, 11:48:31 AM
Hi Lindy,
Welcome to QT.

The reason paranormal is not listed separately is because some agents do lump it in with fantasy, while others do not. If paranormal were separate, you would query them but miss out on all the other agents who don't list it specifically. There's a few other genres with the same problem, usually subsets of fantasy or romance.

I was actually on a different website and someone on there recommended this website to us for tracking agents. I didn't know there was a forum till just the other day, but the tracker part is amazing! Thank you for allowing us to use this as a free service! Greatly appreciated! :)

An established children's author told me about the site. It's been extremely helpful. :)

A writing friend of mine alerted me to the site to help find agents and keep track of her queries. Speaking of queries, mine needs major CPR, so I stumbled across this very helpful forum!  Glad to be here, and hope I can offer advice as well as receive!

There was a Q&A with two agents a while back on the NaNoWriMo Twitter and one mentioned QT in their list of sites to find agencies/publishers. I had been using AgentQuery before which was great too but ever since finding out about QueryTracker, I feel that I have gained a hugely valuable resource that I absolutely love!  ;D The very fact that you can read through comments about peoples experiences is extremely helpful in making the decision if one wants to send out their work to certain agencies and this forum is the best too, I don't know what I'd do without so many wonderful, best advice-giving people.  <3

Just looking at the pages for the main agents, it's obvious this is a central hub so out of seriousness for my work I wanted to join and try to find publishing guidance.

Another writer told me about it - then an agent who sent me a nice rejection letter, suggested I join your forum - glad to be here! I'm trying to publish my first novel and have a lot to learn!

I learned about QueryTracker from reddit's writing group. I've had a paid subscription for a couple of years, but I didn't know there was a forum associated with it until a reader of my WIP suggested it. I guess I wasn't looking too closely at all of the fine print around the QT website.

I've known of query tracker since last February, but it took nine months for the admins to approve my registration request. The problem seems to have been Safari's form submission. In the meantime, I became active on Absolute Write. It's now down hard due to server issues, so I've checked back in here to scratch my writing community itch.

Can't remember - through google and maybe onto absolutewrite (or some other place) where I saw a reference to this one as somewhere you could post for query etc feedback immediately. I'd heard of it before, somewhere, and thought it was a tool for querying agents, mostly in the US, it seemed. Since most UK agents require submission via email, I didn't look into it. But now I've seen it and understood QT, I think it's awesome. What a brilliant resource. I wanted to donate as a thank you, but am stunned at the brilliance of the upgraded membership that you have instead. It's all such a great idea. So, I'm really here just to say thank you!

PS. Oh, I think I got confused with Query Manager but two tools are usually mentioned and maybe the other was this one? Doh.
