Title: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: MelanieLane on August 26, 2007, 05:52:59 PM
 :draw:

It's open for buisness!

Let's see what happens...hehehehe...

 :java: :toast:

Free drinks, food, sarcasm, and consolation 24/7 for the grand opening! Though we'd appreciate a  :$: smiley every once in a while ;)

And, unlike the Tavern, we have classy sandwiches! Club on toasted rye, anyone?

Audal's snagged an official spot as a minority shareholder and spot at all meetings.

Who else wants some?

Looks like you're ready to give the tavern a good run.  And your location can't be beat.  But I think you're gonna have trouble competing with those spam dishes that the tavern is so famous for.

I'll have a squirrel sandwich, and your best kool-aid to wash it down.

(walks in, turns back around in shock)

WHOA!  An actual door??

Ah, but the place brings a tear to my eye not really... One of my protegees has branched off, taken the bull (that was mounted on the QT wall) by the horns, and opened herself up one heckuva cafe!

I am so very, very proud.

Now then, Miss Lane, I just have but one humble request.  Understandably, your grand opening and the subsequent days to follow will have you swamped.  But given the state of lawlessness over yonder at the tavern, I do hope that from time to time, you will peek inside just to make sure no trouble is-a-brewin'.  Because as we all know by now, no guns or roars are as mighty as your'n... And also, I'm sure you're well aware that no one is as capable of the perfect virgin strawberry daquiri as yours truly.

I mean c'mon - do you know the mental wherewithal it took to douse Illinois with a batch?

OK then... I look forward to a harmonious relationship with the cafe and would like to be the first to submit a  :$: for you to frame on a cafe wall.

Good show, Deputy!

Well, that certainly was a good-natured response from the Tavern's proprieter, but I sense some subtext.  A bit of subterfuge.  THERE'S A BOMB IN THE  :$: BILL!!!
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe

lol.

Don't worry, all. I'll make sure the hooligans keep away from the Tavern, too.

:draw:

Here's your squirrel sandwich, Patrick.

Nope, I meant my wish with all sortsa sincerity.  I find it's good to encourage young entrepreneurs on their capitalist quests.  Plus, I thought it would be a much better forum for the bad poetry, an idea which I see has already gone *SPLAT*

Also, the girl's got guns.  And I've-a-larn'd many-a-time not to be on the wrong end of that!

And finally... since I gave the esteemed cafe queen the idea for a name, it only follows that I fully support her effort.  Remember, we hear at Query Tracker want our brethren to succeed.

Don't we?

Yes, yes.  We definitely do!

But when it comes time for the first annual Tavern-vs.-Cafe softball game - OH YEAH - GLOVES OFF :box: - BRING IT!

I pick...  Patrick!
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: audal on August 26, 2007, 08:59:51 PM
(strolls in waving  :flag: of truce)

Hi, may I please have a Request-For-A-Partial sandwich on whole wheat?

But for real, don't ya think the guns are more appropriate in the rough-n-tumble tavern, while the gloves are more cafe-esque?  Granted, the guns are your trademark... but the whole western theme... and... and...

Hmmm.  Tough call.

If Loth's on your softball team, I'm takin' Patrick,  Though I don't recall us flippin' the coin-of-ultimate-karma to decide who picks first. >:(  Ah, I'll let it go.  Ladies first and all.

I wonder what's going on in my tavern...

Wait!  I just saw the post.  If Loth's on Mel's team, that means it's MY pick!

MINE!!!!!

I'm sorry, is there no shouting in here?
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: Lotheus on August 26, 2007, 09:02:23 PM
I didn't know whose team I was on.  I was gonna pick you next, audal.  I wasn't sure if you would go in the first round, and since Pat can delete me, i thought it would be a good idea to pick him first.
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: Patrick on August 26, 2007, 09:07:41 PM
Should I be worried about you guys?
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: audal on August 26, 2007, 09:08:31 PM
The way I saw it was that the proprietors were gonna pick sides, and that Mel selected you... therefore, it would only be right that I split the Montana bad-boy squad up.  I also figured I should somehow get Chelc so as to separate any wonder-twin-teen mojo those two might be cooking up.

But who knows.  I'm amenable to anything in this here anything-goes thread.  Truth is, right now I don't think we have the core 18 needed for a softball game.  Plenty of members, but not enough tavern/cafe regulars yet.

Imagine a day when as wildly successful authors, we are able to actually come together and play this softball game!  Seriously, that should be the ultimate end-game goal of the site!
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: MelanieLane on August 26, 2007, 09:09:35 PM
Yes. You should be afraid. Very afraid!

Here's your sandwich on whole wheat, audal. With a few special additives...TOMATOES! MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And, honestly, yes, guns fit the Tavern better.

But if you have guns, who cares?

:draw:

Wouldn't it be awesome to actually play a real softball game? As SUCCESSFUL AUTHORS!

Of course, that means you actually have to WRITE, instead of hanging around in imaginary bars.

Oh  :censored:!  What am I doing here?

Guess I should go write something.

Dude - were you typing that as I was... or is that just you agreeing & typing fast beyond words?

And to Miss J... Place your bets on whether this will be more of a soothing atmosphere than the Tavern when it comes to actual writing productivity?

I do like the idea of a bad-poetry-stage here, though.  Very beatnik.  It could be this:  :soapbox: which means "Shhhhh.... someone's reciting poetry!"

My guess is everything therein.

OOOOHH!!  Close, Audal!  And Java, you are soemthing special.  Don't you ever forget it.  But ask anyone who gets to know me and they will tell you that I am far more bitter than sweet.
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe

OK, so then it's either gotta be the first Evil Dead or Army Of Darkness.

Or Eastwood.

But it sounds way more like a Bruce Campbell funny.

What is the sound of me ignoring my WIP?

a)  :zip: :zip: :zip:?
b)   ?
c)   ?
d)   :censored: :censored: :censored:?
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe

I'm gonna go with:
e)

Army of Darkness is correct!  Have you seen Bubba Ho-Tep?
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: audal on August 26, 2007, 09:57:40 PM
(takes a bow)

Haven't seen Bubba Ho-Tep... Should I & why?

And (e.) is the correct answer... Though I'm slowly sliding over to the WIP.  The ultimate P.I.T.A. is always the first sentence of every session.

So I usually start with the 3rd, 5th, or 8th sentence!

Should we be rummaging around in Melanie's cafe like this when she's not here?

 :soapbox:

(clears throat & unfolds a soggy napkin)

My poem is called "Kerouac in the 21st Century"

Your travels
Your nourished soul
Your thirst for experience
Your yearning to burn-burn-burn
Your probable B.O.

We applaud your work as it turns 50 years young.
And if you were to travel for us today
If you were once again On The Road,
We would shout, "Dude, get your bony  :censored:  off the road - You're blocking traffic!"
And please, for the love of God,
Take a shower.

(steps from the stage)

Thank you.

you can't write till the season is over? Gosh, does your mom pressure you to be the tennis star or something?  :'(
And no Mickey D's (mid west slang for McDonald's) anything! I want real, fresh, good salads! Like ones from Panera Bread. YUUMM. That is the best restaurant.

It's a cruel world. :draw: My mom doesn't want me to be a tennis star at all (like THAT'D happen). She wants me to maintain my 5.0. But it's not like I ever have trouble doing that - or homework for that matter. I'd hate to know what non-honors classes do, because honors don't do ANYTHING.

And I absolutely loathe Micky D's. Period.

I've never ate at Panera. But there's one in the next town!

Yep. 5.0 is all A's at my school.

Don't ask me how it works, because I don't know.

Well, we DO have to take a minimum of 5 classes in the day, so that might have to do with it...

When I'm in writing season, I do 2000 words a day at least, Chelc.

audal, that's a toughie. I'd have to think long and hard about that one...

And Lo, if I'm banned from tennis, I don't get a P.E. waiver and I can't graduate.

Whoops - wrong venue.  My bad.  They've morphed into one since the Prohibition Era.

But I'm happy about the chapter.  Thus far, I have what looks like a 16 chapter project.  I have large chunks written in 10 of them, but this was the first one I could put a bow on.

Tennis counts toward your credits???
Goodness! Well, for once I am grateful to live in a small hickville town. Tennis here is outside the school program and was in July, so it's over and done with for me.
We have to have 1.5 gym credits to graduate. Each gym class is a .5 credit, so that means only 3 need to be taken. And you could get that done really quick if you wanted, since you can sign up for either an every other day gym class (which lasts one semester) or an every day class (which lasts one quarter).
One quarter at my school is 9 weeks. There's 4 of them. How about your school?

Melanie Tennis-Pants. I like it :)

It makes me sick, too, that we have to have 6 credits of PE to graduate. But we need 4 elective credits, too.

We get 1 credit per semester for the classes we take, so we have to take 3 full years of PE and two full years of an elective. Granted, that elective can be language, show choir, band, orchestra, welding, home ec, woodshop, mechanic, channel one, yadda yadda yadda.
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: Chelc on August 28, 2007, 07:47:49 PM

We need 7 electives.
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: MelanieLane on August 28, 2007, 07:57:56 PM
That's a lot of electives!

But the great thing about the PE is that if you play a sport, you only need 2 credits of PE. So I'll take dance for two semesters my senior year and be golden!
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: Chelc on August 28, 2007, 08:02:19 PM
Well, I have 12 electives done and I'm only half way through with High School, so it isn't much actually.
We need a lot of electives because there is a lot of space to fill...which is odd considering we only have 4 classes a day...hmmm. Then again, no class lasts the entire year.
But I'll have every single needed credit taken after this school year! So I can do whatever I want as a senior! YAY!

A lot. I usually only take 2 core classes a semester (core meaning things like history, science, enlgish, etc)
I was supposed to take AP spanish this year, but due to the class being overfilled, I was kicked out (I took the AP test late, so I was the candidate for kicking out).  >:(

Here's my schedule now:
QUARTERS 1 and 2
Block 1: chemistry
Block 2: spanish 4
Block 3: american english (aka AP english)
Block 4: band (even days)/ novels (odd days)

QUARTER 3
1: modern world affairs
2: phy ed 11/12
3: core plus 3 (aka math)
4: band (even)/ GSI (odd)

QUARTER 4
1: fundamentals of economics
2: academic writing (aka creative writing)
3: same as Q3
4: same as Q3

Thanks lol. I think we'll be dancing to Beyonce, though.

I wish our school had blocks. It'd be easier. We have the same thing everyday. Here's my schedule.

1st/Early Bird (Optional): Symphonic Band I
2nd: News Team Homeroom
3rd: Chemistry Honors
4th: Spanish 1-2
5th: Algebra 3/Trig Honors (I HATE THIS CLASS! We won't learn anything new until fourth quarter. We review stuff from eighth grade. I'm teaching myself Calculus right now, because we're not doing anything worthwhile in math)
6th: Study Hall. I'm a library helper and I edit the news.
7th: Destop Publishing/Graphic Arts (computers...)
8th: American Lit Honors

The way it works at our school is 'honors' classes for underclassmen are the classes where kids who are in the upper 10% of their class are placed, generally speaking. We start AP classes next year, where you earn college credit for the courses.

School's fine. Nothing especially exciting other than fifty problems of Algebra (finished in 20 minutes), Indian creation legends, cataloguing books/magazines, and matches.

I mean, how near-pathetic can life be when you're in my class and you do a lab with flammable gas and matches, and no fire alarms go off? My class has standards!  ;)

...But the two most likely to actually 'slip' and accidentally 'light' something on fire do the lab tomorrow...so there's always Friday...

I have a  tennis meet tomorrow and Saturday. ;) I can't wait!

And I was ALMOST caught writing. My school librarian covered for me. Or else it would've been hasta la vista, babe.

And here's your chicken salad, and anything else y'all ordered.

I'm too tired for bad poetry today (apparently when I'm tired all my poetry is excellent?).

And Loth, if you can't guess the song before our youthful cafe proprietor swings by and hits a bulls-eye, boy are you gonna feel silly!

Yup, though I'm known for a fondness for silly 80's schlock, I have a wide reach!  And speaking of 80's schlock... This from an email a friend sent me today:

Going to Red Rocks on Sunday to see the Black Crowes.  I was extremely disappointed to find out after we got the tickets that Def Leppard, Foreigner & Styx are playing the same night in Denver.  What a flashback that show would be! (http://Going to Red Rocks on Sunday to see the Black Crowes.  I was extremely disappointed to find out after we got the tickets that Def Leppard, Foreigner & Styx are playing the same night in Denver.  What a flashback that show would be!)

DEPUTY!

Wow.  It's like she saw the milk carton in a dream and knew she had to come back.  Like a QT bat signal, perhaps.

Well then... Sorry for the grounding & the accompanying reason.  But glad to hear you & your manuscript were sneakin' around behind her back.

Maybe she's grounding you so you'll get the sequel finished? ;)

All I know is my father was very proud when one of my first books was published. He carried a copy to work to show to everyone. He never read it as far as I could tell when the book came back to me after he died. Still, I know it didn't matter because he was proud of the accomplishment. I'm betting your mother will be equally as proud.

So get back to writing.

Amateurs. Don't they know that webmasters can't hear anything plotted against them in parentheses? If the whole message is written that way, they think they're losing their hearing. It's a really pitiful sight seeing one post after that asking "Huh? What's going on?"

<coneofsilence> So, anyway Chelc, I think we should enlist the help of some antags from our WIPs in our evil take over, as confusion and diversion, you know . You have any evil dictators roaming about your repatoire of characters? I only have one named Igor Achtraskavic. He's good at diversions. We could register him and evily pose as him. But not in a Francis way. That'd just be too cruel. Like a diversion involving singing show tunes. His signature can be 'Good Morning Baltimore' which when sung by a man is pretty evil, aye? I've actually heard a boy sing it, and...well... ouch. It's evil. Trust me <endconeofsilence>

Not that I'd use it or anything.

LOTH!

i just realized you have specialized knowledge i need -

tomorrow i have to take a pre-employment drug test.  believe it or not, i've never had to do that before!  well, drug testing in the radio industry would be rather disasterous, and before that it wasn't as commonplace to do.

anyway...

i don't do drugs, so i wasn't concerned.  but now i realize i'm drinking alcohol - is that an issue?  should i put the cordial down right now, or is that something they don't test for.  i mean, it's legal, so why would it be an issue, right?
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe

THe alcohol will be out of your system by then anyway.  It clears pretty quickly. They don't test for alcohol usually.  Marijuana, methamphetamines and opiates are the most common tests.  As long as you're not taking any perscription painkillers or, obviously, using illegal drugs, you should be fine.
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: Chelc on October 29, 2007, 08:27:37 PM
oh, well, it's not really cheating. it's not like I didn't read the book, or like I can't come up with something on my own. I just figured that since it's patrick's fault I've been procrastinating on homework so much he owes me  ;D
so critical analysis...basically, your critisism on the book? yeah...that.
Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: Patrick on October 29, 2007, 08:28:15 PM
Uh Oh, you've done it now Joan.  It depends on what you're drinking.  Some alcohol will show up as cocaine or crack in the tests.  Wine is the worst.  So what are you drinking?

Well, I know Hitchhikers is the most enduring and creative story ever written.  What more do you need to know?
so much for the 'critical' part of criticism!!

The only criticism I would have about Hitchhikers is that after three books of that stuff it gets a little old.  Of course he went on to write 3 or 4 more (but still called it a trilogy).

My first exposure to it was in High School when my Physics teacher somehow thought it was appropriate and so showed the class the entire British TV series.  We didn't learn much physics that year, but we learned the important stuff, like always keep your towel handy and "Don't Panic."

OK Chelc, I'm trying to think of something critical.  Let's see, some people find that particular form of humor to be too slapstick.  You could also say that his imagination was a replacement for real story telling ability, in the sense that he never had to worry about writing himself into a corner, since in a universe where anything can happen, he could always just dream up a solution.  Take the part where they are thrown into space by the Vulgons just to be rescued by another passing ship.  You couldn't get away with that anyplace else.

I'm grasping here, but if you're desperate you may be able to use it.

Title: Re: The Yo Yo Cafe
Post by: joanjunkmail on October 30, 2007, 05:29:56 PM
i think it's a-ok to sign up and not reach 50K!  that's only the goal, not really the point - both in my book and in their book(s).

i am DEFINITELY going to do it.  and, i will do the 50k, because this is more than a fun thing to do, or a 'challenge'... i want to experience this thing writers talk about - letting the story write itself.  i'm far too controlled.  and, i don't write fiction - i fictionALIZE from my own experiences, but that's different.  this is storytelling, and it's new and this is the perfect venue to try.

plus, i'm bored.  i have more than enough to do, mind you, but my insides need... something new.  i have a new job, one that'll probably keep me working 50 to 60 hrs per week, but it's in one place and that's not enough.  i need... new.  so, i'll make it up!

i think i'm going to walk 200k (that's kilometers) in holland in july.  but, that's next year, so that doesn't count.  the only new thing this year was sitting on my bottom for 10 months in my house trying to find a job.

BOOOO-OOOORING!

I think I'm gonna go for it!  We'll just see how it goes.  But, I'm not (and remind me of this later) going to kick myself if I fall short of the goal!  It really should be fun. ;D

Okay...going to sign up now...be back in a while.

This forum software does a very poor job of listing unread posts.  Someday I'll find the time to write my own.  But for now, it works better to look for the blue squares next to each forum and then click on them and look for the "new" icons.

Turn to channel 267 - there's a good women's tennis match on!

BTW, you wanna make more cafe noise?

OK, topic:  So now that you've had a few months... who's your mixed doubles partner gonna be at Wimbledon?

What, you think I'd forget & let you off the hook?

My mixed doubles Wimbledon partner would be from our guy's tennis team. ;)

Ha! I weasled my way out!

**Turns to channel 267**

The recent discovery of the new smileys have blown The Deputy's QT universe wide open!

I would like a cup of coffee slightly weakre than the one I just made myself.  And because of this coffee, I would like a side order of Tums.

I would also like it if you could whip up a batch of writer's-block-be-gone.

And if there's a tonic that helps my hair cut itself, I could use a haircut.

 :$: thank you.

Oh... what would Voltaire say about THAT?!

"Aujourd'hui ce qui ne vaut pas la peine d'être dit, on le chante." (Nowadays what isn't worth saying is sung.)

Popularly attributed to Voltaire, but in fact stated by Beaumarchais.

Well, actually, you didn't. I was an Aeorosmith fan before some of QT's good folks were even born. ("Eat the Rich", "Love in an Elevator", and (dare I say it??) "Dude Looks Like a Lady".)

However, I will concede that --with a handful of exceptions-- for the past decade or so, popular "music" has ceased to resonate with me.

Fortunately, there's always Mozart and Rossini. And the oldies station.

That's harsh. Really harsh.

Dude Looks Like a Lady and Love in an Elevator are crunk.

Aerosmith WASN'T getting booed, I assure you. The people were just figuring out KISS had played, and were having a delayed reaction to their KISSiness <cone>maybe it was the alcohol and other substances?</cone>.

<cone> I know that as a teen, I should know what 'crunk' means, but I don't. All I know is that it has positive connotations and it was in the senior class's slogan of "Betcha Won't Get Crunk". Word on the street says it's from a song with four 'words'. Guess the title and I'll give you some karma. </cone>

And edited on you busters like I ate some bake beans (LOLOLOLOLOL)"

It's interesting that you bring up Beaumarchais.  He was a watchmaker by the true name of Pierre Augustin Caron who took on an assumed name and four years later purchased the office of secretary to the king to obtain a patent of nobility after using connections he obtained through someone else's position (his wife).

LOL! Actually, I think it was because they did some of their bluesy stuff, and the crowd was NOT into it. To be fair, I HAVE gone to an Aerosmith (only) concert and it kicked so.much.ass. Especially the almost getting trampled part as the crowd rushed the stage when they came out to an extended stage.

But KISS still rocks harder. Face paint, leather, AND 8 inch heels? Doesn't get any better than that...

Not quite. His first wife, Madeleine-Catherine Franquet, died ten months after they were married in 1756. He purchased the noble office four years later, true, but with the patronage of his mentor, Joseph Pâris-Duverney. He didn't marry again until 1768.

Though, his wealth did come from the two widows he married and (it is argued) poisoned.  His first wife, before marrying him, persuaded her husband to give him office, died shortly after (interesting coincidence...) and the two were married a few months later.   She died 10 months later.

Gotta love history.

if the parachute-less dive into the can didn't kill them.

i wonder if worms have a sense of adventure?  as they tumble through space into a pile of coffee grounds and onion peels, do they yell 'baaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnzzzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiii'?

;D This reminds me... when I was 12ish, my grandma asked me what sort of soda I wanted.. my answer was Mountain Dew. For the entire trip to the grocery store, she explained what a homemade distillery was, and demanded that I tell her who had given me Mountain Dew in the past, and where, and was I by myself, etc.. I remember being so afraid that the stupid little town wasn't stocking it, (why else wouldn't she know?) but when I had proof that I wasn't lying about my sources (Mountain Dew bottles on the soda shelf, YEAH!!), she couldn't believe a company would use such a name and wouldn't buy it.
