Title: Posting sample chapters on author website?
Post by: beckygilbert on July 27, 2019, 07:48:42 AM
Hello, bookish compatriots~!

I was wondering if anyone had any insight re: posting sample chapters of unpublished works on an author website. It seems like a natural thing to do in terms of garnering interest for our stuff, but is there any weird overlap between published/unpublished? If we "publish" a chapter or two on a website, does that somehow conflict with pitching unpublished material?

I'm probably overthinking, but I'm interested in this technicality.  :)

If the website isn't password protected, yes.

I have the first chapter posted on my site and my publisher doesn't seem to have an issue with it. But your mileage may vary.

From what I've read, it's all right to post snippets or teasers. I used to post snippets of my work on my old blog but only friends would read it which is mainly why I would post it, just for entertainment.

Thanks, everyone! It seems like the safest thing to do might be not to post any exerpts before you've at least got an agent to advise you, since different parties may have different views on this.
