I've received two requests for fulls, but I'm not totally comfortable putting who they're from. Most of you know or can figure it out...I don't know. Guess there's just something I have about jinxing it if I write it out in a public forum! I'll definitely add the names if/when I get a rejection or *gasp*...something else! Till then:

2 fulls out

Queried from end of September till end of October:

(in order they came in) -
1 full, 1 partial, 2 rejections, 1 full, 1 reject, 1 partial, 1 full, 1 full, 1 reject

Total so far: 4 fulls, 2 partials, 4 rejections

I have eight manuscripts; however, I am trying only to push three in a series. The stats below are about those three manuscripts only.
After two years of working on queries and revisions these are my stats to date:
Queries sent 91
Rejections 34
No responses 55
Showed interest 1- Hartline-Terry Burns
Requests for proposal 1- AMG- Dan Penwell [waiting for response after four months now]

I've received ZERO rejections!

Ah hem, of course I've sent out ZERO queries at this point...

Gotta finish the manuscript first.

It's been a week and three days since the agent who has my full told me she "loves it" and asked me if I was still interested in representation. I told her I was and she said she still had to finish reading the ms and would get back in a few days with a "definite answer".

So I wait.

And tear out my hairs, one by one, by one.......

I am clearly among the elite. I think I am behind the power curve (military speak for I need to improve and change something). I have an hypothesis about my poor showing thus far, i.e., the genre I have such an affinity for is a small niche, albeit growing, and therefore because of that the density of favorable responses is small. Perhaps the needed ingredients are perseverance, timing and querying the right agent. Still sounds like a shot in the dark, but being a soldier, that's not a real difficult problem to overcome.

Australian email torture (hint, hint). But damn if it isn't nice torture. Man, if she rejects me after all this I am going to need a massive Koolaid transfusion. And weeks of therapy. And a new wardrobe. And a trip to Disney World! and, and...oh...Yay..I am going to Disney World! On Dec. 21 the fam and I head to Florida until Jan 4th. So I can either bask or sulk in the sun!

Ooooh... I smell a party.

Wait - JW, if it's an Australian Monday, does this mean you're gonna be up 'til all hours Sunday night hitting refresh on your email?  I can see JW posting Chelc-like conversations with herself in the tavern from midnight to 6AM...

Post by: DavidLewis on December 10, 2007, 08:07:14 AM
I had sent a proposal to Terry Burns in October 07. He responded today with a rejection. Most of the rejections so far have been just 'one more rejection', but his is really hard, because I really think he would have been the best agent for my genre based upon my research. Oh, well- back to the drawing board.

Good luck to everyone who's waiting. A shame that waiting is mainly what we do, at least when we're not writing...

By the way, I have two fulls out right now, one to Scott Martin at Trident and one to Joe Veltre at Artists Literary Group. Like you, gypsy, I hesitate to send more queries until at least one of these comes back, though I did read somewhere that if an agent doesn't specifically ask for an exclusive it's okay to double up. All's fair etc. etc.

Boy, a spate of rejections for Monday. Sorry to hear it.

For some reason it never gets easier to absorb that bad news. You tell yourself you can handle it, but paraphrasing Lannie, "hope springs internal." Always a good idea to shoot the next query out on the same day.

I once had a hugely surprising rejection come on the day after Thanksgiving. That one hit like an anvil falling out of the sky, lemme tell ya.

Anyway, back on that horse everyone. And Jess and GG, good luck to both of you.

Okay, I am beginning to get the picture now. Your letter explains why so many literary agents had gone to court to have peace bonds issued against me. I need to learn to tone it down a bit. Nice Letter, GG. It gets the point across without a direct threat.

This is the kind of letter I would have sent.

Dear JW's soon to be agent, or else you’re in more trouble than a fly in a fly swatter factory.

You are being EXTREMELY unfair.  At least 10,000 people's lives are being spent in a state of constant refresh due to your lack of response.  I am talking about people with hard cold cash, cash just waiting to be spent on JW’s novel. Most of us have already preordered it online. We demand a rapid response with an offer of representation for our amazing friend.  We await your TIMELY response, or else!

Love and kisses and a nudge, or else.

QT

On second thought. Let's go with Lannie's suggestion. I vote to add on her line. Peace bond or no peace bond.

Would you describe the feeling you get when you receive a request for a full similar to that feeling a person might get if they had spent three days walking around in the desert without any water, and they stumbled and fell to the sand believing they are about to die, and suddenly they find the bottled water they had been looking for.

I've never gotten a request for full, but I got really thirsty once. I was just wondering how it felt.

Congratulations on the full, Coll.

After receiving some seriously appreciated assistance from several forum members on my query letter, I am surprised to find that I have received exactly zero rejections in the last two weeks. In fact, I have received exactly zero responses.

I take this as a good sign, being instantly rejected out-of-hand tends to strip away any hope.

Some people see the glass as half empty, some see it as half full.

I just want a bigger glass.

Well, I don't have one, but if this keeps up I'm either going to need one or a regimen of pharmaceutical cocktails.
In the meantime my graphic design frenzy kept me busy all evening and now I'm cranky and must go to bed. Oh, dear..this is a total thread hijack..I'm sick of talking about ME!

But guess what...I worked on the new QT logo with a QUILL, so hopefully Super Pat likes it and will show you guys tomorrow. That was good fun..much less difficult than writing, but in the end, graphic design is like Chinese food for me..after an hour I'm hungry again. Writing fills me up.

While we all wait in agony for JW's good news, I'm just wondering. What's the average time to decision on a full ms you're getting these days? In my own experience, good news seems to come fairly quickly. Recent passes on full mss for me have run about a month to six weeks, I'd guess, though I've had cases where I gave up on an agent only to get the ragged SASE back a year later.

How we doin' on this front?
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Legionsynch on December 14, 2007, 12:02:32 PM
My only full i've heard back from was roughly around 2 months.  I also had a partial that was a 3 month wait on a form rejection.

I haven't queried the new one yet, but I imagine 2-3 months is about average.  1 month for faster agents.

Hey Guys,

Got a pass today from one of my partials (Ms. Regan). Boo.

     Dan-

I met the editor at a conference, pitched my story, she liked the idea and asked for a full. I also have another editor reading an earlier version (wish I could give her the newer one but i don't want to bother her yet). I have one more editor in my pocket who actually wrote her address on my notebook and asked me to send her a full but I'm holding off until I exhaust my agent list. It's a tough balance. Agents aren't too happy if you have too many copies floating around publishing agencies.

Let me quote Donald Sutherland in 'Kelly's Heroes', "We don't need any negative vibes around here."
It is normal to doubt yourself. It is not appropriate to quit writing. I feel almost the same way that you feel right now, with so many rejections and all. Nevertheless, I know that when the timing is right, when the market is right and my writing matured that getting published will have to happen. It's like an airplane, airplanes fly because they have to, the physics requires it. Same thing applies to our writing endeavors. Good writing, great timing, good agent, needful market all make for a best seller. Yours is just around the bend. One great benefit to this forum is to genuinely seek encouragement from those who are empathetic. Your writing is fine. We all can mature our writing into the commercial market better. I bet if Edgar Rice Burroughs could testify to his experience it might have been similar.

**waves to GG and Coll** I'm in your corner here too, guys. So sorry to hear about the passes.
It KILLED me to have an agent recently pass on my partial after(!) he said he liked my writing!! Uggggh. I keep mumbling to myself "Why'd he have to tell me that he liked my writing??" And then I go peruse the internet and read how certain writers shot to stardom and 'major' deals overnight, and mumble some more.

Self doubting? Oh yeah. Table of one right here.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the rejections I cannot change, the courage to keep on submitting, and the wisdom to know which agents are complete idiots.  ;D

If I may ask, Lannie, what is the criteria wherein you might classify an agent as an idiot?  I only ask because I can think of about four or five occasions recently wherein you vilified an agent/agency name, yet gave no evidence to substantiate this other than the fact that they rejected you.  Granted, these are open boards & everyone has been free to say what they please.  However, to some degree, we should also be helping to educate those who join up, no?  And if they see someone mention the name of an agent, then a comment about how you'll be more selective in who you query, it might cast undue aspersions, y'know?

Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there.  I hope you understand.  We've been making a big fuss lately about how agents are people and not Gods, right?  Given that, I truly don't think it's necessary to rake an agent over the coals without good reason.

That's all.
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: audal on December 18, 2007, 09:03:07 PM
Kathryn Green, Lori Perkins, Kim Witherspoon, The Firebrand Agency... I think there are a couple more, as well.  A few of your comments were less abrasive than others, but seriously, because it's a forum, I can't detect a playful tone and instead only read vitriol from your words.  And I'm familiar with your humor.  Yes, I understand your comment about Ms. Witherspoon not being "the right agent" for you... But would she have been had she offered representation?

Whatever your answer, I'm just trying to say that online, sarcasm often doesn't translate.

The truth is, it's probably cathartic to throw cyber darts at agents names when we're less than thrilled with the attention or results we've seen.  Still, if anyone has something negative to say, they should take care to bring evidence to their aim.
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: joanjunkmail on December 18, 2007, 09:33:24 PM
well, for what it's worth, I, too, have felt that perhaps you have been rather disdainful of agents, and that has been coloring your posts (and your advice to JW).  Aud (once again) has voiced my thoughts (darn you, owen - stay out of my head!), and I wonder if it's very productive to take a reductive approach to an important intermediary (ie, agents) in the process of fame, glory, and - oh yeah! - riches.

You mean, like accusing someone of villifying agents?
Right you are.  :)

Lannie, I'm honestly not trying to start something here.  But you say you want evidence, so here are a few passages that come to mind.  Again, you're free to say anything you please... It's just that some of the comments come across as slighly above-it-all.

Anyway...

Quote
On one memorable day I was rejected by Russell Galen, Laura Dail, Kristin Nelson, Laney Becker, Ewe Stender, Laura Langley, Maya Rock, and Paul S. Levine. The next day was a little better; I only got shot down by Anne Hawkins, Kimberly Whalen, Lori Perkins, Elise Proulx, Lisa Vance, and Betsy Amster.

The amazing thing is, looking back on it now, I wouldn't want any of them to represent me (except for Laney Becker.)

Why?  Because I see a whole lotta great names in there?

Quote
One of my earliest lightning-fast rejections came from Lori Perkins, who opined that my story was great but unpublishably overlong, and that I should resubmit after cutting 70,000 words. And this was after I'd already cut 23,000 from my first draft!

Well, I had a good laugh, deleted her from my list, and continued to search out agents who actually have a capacity to think outside the arbitrary word-count box.

I can understand your frustration with this one... but is insulting her intellectual capacity the right approach here?

Quote
Back in May Kathryn Green was the first to request, and subsequently reject, my partial. It stung at first, but in 20/20 hindsight I am not the slightest bit sorry that she passed. Since then I have gotten wiser, tougher, and a whole lot more selective about who I query.

You're not asking for my opinion, but I can't help but detect some bitterness.  Dunno, please - anyone else - let me know if I'm off base here.

As far as Kathryn Green, she was actually one of the great delights from last spring & summer's query season.  I found her prompt, polite, constructive, helpful, engaging... Sure my criteria for an agent is not the same as yours or anyone else's, but like I said before, if you want to speak of an agent negatively, please share a reason so that others might understand your intent.
Title: Re: Request log

I think we all need some  :koolaid:   :)  I certainly can't speak for Aud, but I know many others on here have posted about their bad experiences with agents but refrained from using names - if nothing else it is a courtesy and maybe that is all Aud is trying to say (again, forgive me if I'm getting it wrong Aud).  I know for myself (and I realize this makes me sound like the amateur I am) but I would hate for an agent to wander through here some day and see negative things (in general, I really am not targeting anyone here) that were said about them when they weren't here to defend themselves.  Yes, they are just people, and hopefully, someday, one of the glorious creatures will work for me, but until then, I'd rather stay on their good sides  ;D  Maybe, just to be fair all around, we should refrain from specific names (other than our simple request/reject lists) unless there really is something specific that new writers need to be warned about.

What a spirited and interesting conversation.

You know, Loth and I will often sit around and say bad things about agent so-and-so who rejected us.  "What a pin-head."  "Stupid idiot."  Fun stuff like that.  Do we mean it?  Of course not.  We're just blowing off steam or trying to laugh in the face of rejection.  Sure we talk about calling an agent's office and hanging up, but we hardly ever do it.  If you take it personal it'll drive you nuts, but I also think you can't take it too serious either.  At least not the rejection part, but then I'm a big advocate of the "laugh it off" philosophy.  So when I hear someone else putting down an agent because they were rejected, I just assume it is the same thing; a little sarcasm rolled up in a blanket of protective humor.  Deep down we all know that a rejection isn't a real indication of an agent's intelligence (just bad taste) but I can still dream about ordering 200 pizzas and having them sent to that so-and-so at Writer's House (and when I'm feeling really evil, I'll order them with anchovies  >:D)

That said, maybe we should be careful not to go too far on a public forum.  I seriously doubt there needs to be any concern about agent retribution, but publicly at least we should keep our cool and remain professional.  Save the name calling for after you're a bestseller.  It'll sting more then.  :wag:

There's a vast gaping maw out there, hungry for good YA. (Me, too!) Yours wasn't fantasy, though, was it? (mine is urban fantasy/paranormal romance-kind of? depends on my mood).

Good luck on the call Jess!!! If you're researching a list of things to ask and not ask, maybe you could pass those along to us? GG had a list started somewhere too. It'd be good info for everyone!

JW- What a relief it must be to KNOW more!

Thanks thanks and more thanks!!

JW, in my query I described it as "a gothic tale that mixes elements of mystery, romance, and the supernatural, bringing a ghostly new twist to an old legend." It's set in modern day, but I don't really know if that terms it as 'urban fantasy.' I personally don't really see it that way.

Thanks for all the hair braiding, toe crossing, eye crossing and well wishes everyone!! And GG! You're gonna kill me...she's calling at 4pm est. Please don't get too distracted while driving!!!

(Oh and Emsky, I wrote down what was on GG's list from here, and found a couple of things from AgentQuery to ask. I'm so nervous though that I'll probably have to email her all my questions...)

This is a long talk! That's good, isn't it?

BTW, I misunderstood the message from my potential agent. My crit groups set me straight. She's not re-reading the ms...she's getting another opinion. This means I've passed muster for her, apparently. So I guess that's pretty good news and I'm quite a dunce to have misread that.

Now for the internal question.. (I hate to ask, but I'm so curious)... of your 5 fulls, how does this agent rank? Meaning, will you notify the other agents immediately, or hold out just in case your DA wants you too?  :'(

Not a problem Emsky...getting to the real meat of the question here. I *do* have two from the fulls and one from the partial that I am hoping to hear good things from. Every single one of the agents did ask me to notify them if I received an offer, so I'm emailing them all now.

I want to collect all the books of the writers who used QT to find their agents.  You are the first that I know of.  After things are settled in, and if it is OK with you,  I would like to make an official announcement.  But not until you are ready.

And again...  WOOT!

And Jess, I'm just wondering (I don't know if you talked about it at all) but how did the agent conversation go?  Clearly, she loved it enough to want to sign you, but how bout the rest of it?  Are the things she pointed out revising really that much?

I tried to weave in my general questions so they didn't come out like I was grilling her (and I mostly went with GG's list - they were all really good questions) and was pretty happy with the answers. Overall, she wants some rewriting and basically shared with me what her vision for the book was. Now I have to decide if our visions meshed, and if I agree with what she said about the rewrites (with some compromise of course).

Eee gads.  I am so in trouble. I knew I'd be like this.

Java, welcome to the query pool.  Jump right in, but be careful of the undertow.

Jessica, another full?  Now you're just wasting them.  ;D  Let someone else have a turn, sheesh.  Maybe you should let someone else use it instead.  How would that be?  "Dear agent, I know you asked for my manuscript, but I'm sending this one instead..."

Well, GG went to work, and I didn't get out of bed (for real) until after noon, so all in all I'm doing okay.  I'm not a super big birthday person, so just having some downtime to myself is the best present I could get.  It's giving me time to work which I desperately need. :)

And of course the cake is chocolate.

Last full came in today.  Rejection from Joe Veltre.  Oddly enough, it really doesn't bother me because I was expecting it.  My ending is....without.  Luckily, I followed the "Amazing Aud"'s advice and still have a random pool of 40 agents to query.  Some good ones in there! Onward and upward.  Next round will be the one to hit and I'll have an agent by my birthday!

Sorry GG...onto 2008!

Maybe you could write an alternative ending and when you get the requests for fulls you could send both???
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: LeahClifford on December 22, 2007, 01:27:39 PM
Yea, my ending is the problem.  I'm rewriting the whole thing to fit the ending that Lege suggested a million years ago.  I've rewritten the damn thing about 10 times now to fit different parts and pieces and endings but each time it's come out stronger and couldn't have been written without the little nuances that the past versions have brought to it.  I have a Fallout Boy song that keeps playing over in my head.

 :band:

I'm gonna make you bend and break
(It sent you to me without wings)
Say a prayer but let the good times roll
In case God doesn't show
(Let the good times roll, let the good times roll)
And I want these words to make things right
But it's the wrongs that make the words come to life

"Who does he think he is?"
If that's the worst you got
Better put your fingers back to the keys

Elky,

I am so glad to see you got a pleasant surprise in December.   Best of luck.

You have helped me so much. I am sending karma your way for all of your help.

I just found out tonight how to sent karma, so I am sending yours out later than I should have.  :sorry: Like about three weeks late. I have to wait an hour to send more than one to anyone.

Title: Re: Request log

Actually, (not that I am tramping for karma or anything  :naughty: ) but you can send karma to more than one person but just not the same person twice within an hour - and thanks for the congrats :)
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Nostrabuttus on December 30, 2007, 10:56:30 PM
So you're saying there's a chance I could send you some more karma?  :)

That's what I meant to say. Only one karma per person per hour. So if someone wants to give me twenty-four karma, they have to stay up for twenty-four hours. I can live with someone doing that for me. Any takers? I'll check back back tomorrow night to see who did it.

Thanks guys :) I really do try not to get too excited over partials, cause let's face it, they get rejected most of the time, but I am excited about these last two.  Just get the spiked koolaid ready for when the rejections come in   ;D

Yay, Elky. As it stands I have only one living partial. I did hear from the other two I thought were rotting away somewhere. The second partial rejection was actually very nice. She said she loved the characters, loved the voice, hated the plot, but feel free to sub any new projects in the future. Not a bad R at all. As it stands this novel has one last shot with the kangaroo lady then it goes down for a long, long sleep. I'm not sure I want the last agent who has my partial with her track record. I actually hope she rejects me!

Here's a nice warm Koolaid toddy for me homies.

Congrats Elky, fingers crossed.

Question. I had a full request from JV at Artists Literary (sent on 12/10/07). Should I ask for a status report or give them more time? And, if I do ask them about status, should I inform that I have completely rewritten (changed from 1st person to 3rd) the story?

Hi Coll!!! Thanks. :)  You know, for fulls (and even partials) I give them at least 3 months before I even consider doing a status check - and by then I usually have an answer.  Reading chapters or a full manuscript takes time, esp when this is not an agent's main job. So I'd give JV some more time.  Although once you do send a status check it might not be a bad idea to mention you've switched POV - that gives them another option maybe if they like your story, but don't like the POV.

That is an awesome rejection!!  I got a full rejection once where the agent said she didn't fall in love with the plot but that I was a competent author and should keep working.  But that is the only personal feedback I have ever gotten on a rejection. And an invite to send future stuff is AWESOME!!!

I'd wait until the middle of February and then status check. I know he was super busy over the holidays, so I'm sure a lot of his work got back logged.

Thanks, Elky. Yeah, but I hope I never have to (send her anything)  I've scratched her off my list for good. She's too way slow and I haven't heard of her selling anything in the recent past. But her rejection was almost like praise, so it gave me a boost.

I am happy to hear that. This could be the one. We need more people hot on the trail to fame and fortune. We don't want Jessica to get lonely out there. I have been told the trail can sometimes be long and often is a mix of twists and turns, hills and valleys, but it is one of the most exciting trips a person can take.

I don't have any doubt you are well on your way.

Good luck, Elky.

Gotta think if they sent the contract out for review it's a VERY positive sign. Will try to keep my hopes earthbound with yours, the thicker the skin the sweeter the wine--or something like that. In other words I hope it clicks, and it sounds like it may, but if not another notch in the post of resolution for the next day. The end has to start at the beginning, oh my tongue is twisted with mixed metaphors today! This thought may have to be modified from its origninal size to fit your screen, but it was meant well.

Okay, Lege. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens to writers who dock their vessel of words at The Yacht Club.

Congratulations.

I checked with Zelda. She's lives four trailers up from mine and she is a psychic. She told me she sees some good things in the future for you. She asked that you please mention her name occasionally. It helps to know people like Zelda are checking out the future for you. She's claims to be over a hundred years old, but if you ask me, she doesn't look a day over ninety. I'll let you know which agent she sees in your future. She feel asleep just before the agent's name started to come through, or I would have been able to give it to you.

Great news, Lege. The best of luck to you.

So I had a dream last night that I had to come onto QT and explain, very snippily, how easy it was to get a whole bunch of requests right off the bat, and still not have an agent.  Especially after querying your entire list of agents.

I was the Anti-Jess.

So I had a dream last night that I had to come onto QT and explain, very snippily, how easy it was to get a whole bunch of requests right off the bat, and still not have an agent.  Especially after querying your entire list of agents.

I was the Anti-Jess.

I had a similar dream, but it was total puzzlement why I couldn't get a single request.  Wait, that's real life!  Damn.  I'm letting my queries expire then I'm done with agents and back to small publishers.

Yeah!!  Great job!

I AM very pleased when our fellow members get such great responses and offers of representation.  But if I am being completely honest, I feel jealous!!!

Is that terrible of me to say?

I've had 3 requests for partials and 1 full.  And that has taken me over 2 months to get.  2 of my partials have been rejected, and one I can't send out until nothing else is out.  So right now I have out 1 full.  And I know that, if I didn't see all the great responses on here, I'd probably feel pretty good about myself overall.

Ok... my self-pitty whine is done.

Back to the regularly scheduled praise..

Hey, I just got lucky.  I'm STILL jealous of JessV.  I think it's natural, MJ. :)

Plus, look at it this way.  You've gotten 4 requests already.  That's more than some people (like me with my first novel) ever get. :)  So clearly you're doing something right, and it's only a matter of time.

Winter? What's that? We got our "major" snow for the year on Wednesday and it was all of two inches. Everything is just brown here. Although Lots of green would be pretty nice right about now.

Well. . .  after sitting with no response (not even an initial 'yes we got it - give us x time') from an agent who requested my full manuscript at the end of January, I finally got up the nerve (or lost my mind completely) to send a follow-up email.

I asked if they'd received the manuscript and basically was looking for confirmation. I would think they'd also say (without being asked directly) how much longer it would be for a response.  :naughty:

So - now I wait, again. And hopefully, I haven't pissed anyone off enough to ship me a rejection, for a simple inquiry (other than sending the manuscript I haven't sent any other emails - and she did say 'if you have any questions, ask'.

Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Diane on March 05, 2008, 03:06:30 PM
Not useless! You know they received it!

After getting a 66% response rate my first week (including a 33% success rate -- that's 2/3 queries got a response, 1/3 positive), I've sent out 6 more queries and gotten... 0! I know, I know, this is a long process, but after week 1 I had unrealistically high hopes this might speed along.

I have 6 queries floating around right now. Should I up it to 10? *Really* make myself bonkers?

Well, to balance out all the faboo news, I got a dink today.

Which brings up another question: anybody know what the rules are at Curtis Brown for querying another agent in the agency? I'm not in any hurry -- I have plenty of other agents to query in the meantime. But I know at some houses if you get dinked by one agent, you're rejected by all.

Hmm Diane, I can't see that mentioned on either the UK or Australian website.  Don't see much of a wesbite for the US other than a contact page.

I guess you could ask Nathan Bransford because he says on his blog "when in doubt, query me".

Congratulations to everybody with good news, and good luck to those of you waiting to hear back! I just finished reading this thread, and I love it. Hearing success stories from other writers makes you feel so hopeful and happy!

My current stats:
2 partials were requested, both rejected. Another agent requested the full, then passed. After that, I got hit with an idea, and revised the MS to include it; I think it's much stronger for it. Now, two agents have the revised full. And, of course, in between that, there were a lot of rejections ;) I have 9 queries out right now, still waiting to hear back from those. I have a good feeling about this month, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh, I have a story to share about one of the fulls that is currently out. I don't know much about the actual set-up of computers, so when I got a laptop for Christmas, my dad had to get it up and running for me. He mentioned that he had registered a gmail account for me, since that's what he uses, but I've been using hotmail for years and I'm happy with it, so I've never used the gmail account, never even opened it. In January, I queried Joe Veltre, using their form on the website. I had no idea that the form is sent through your default email account, or that my dad had set that account to be the gmail one. So, after a couple of weeks without a response, I assumed that was a no. Then, on March 5th, I happened to open outlook express on my laptop, because I wanted to try and set up my hotmail account on it, and I see my dad had set up the gmail account there. Strangely, I see there's something in the inbox. I go to see what it is, and am stunned to find an email from Joe's assistant, asking for me to send the full MS, a synopsis, and a bio! I check the sent section, and sure enough, there's the form. So, I then think to check the date, and my heart totally drops when I see that she sent it on January 22nd! I sent everything out to them yesterday, and explained the situation. I'm really hoping they'll understand and don't think that I can't be trusted to get back to them in a timely fashion or anything like that. *Chews nails*

Yea!   I finally got a request for "additional materials."  I sent the full since the request was:

"I would love to read your book BAD SPELLING. Please send it to me electronically?"

I took that for a full request and sent the whole thing in MS Word.  That seems to be what people think of as electronically.  I'm also not too sure about that ? on the end, but I'll take whatever I can get.

Then rewrite them!

It's hard enough getting an agent to sentence 6, let alone page 6, so work on those pages, missy!

Ah man... you don't understand.  The beginning of my novel is the spawn of Satan.  I've rewritten it more than any portion of my novel, to the point I'm numb.  I THINK I like it at this point, but I'm not confident about it like I am the rest of my book. Beginnings are my nemesis...my vice...my knife in my heart. And it is the beginning that is so important to catch an agent's eye.

Sigh...

And like all writing, at some point you need to abandon it.

There are a few agents out there--Joshua Bilmes and Russell Galen among them--who practically threaten death by papercut if you dare include additional material. But if they don't I include a few pages.

And Diane if it were me, I'd be out there doing a happy dance on a table top.  :ban:

Yay! An agent who had the partial requested a full!

(Which leads me to this question: since I sent that partial, I have edited one chapter so that the scene happens somewhat differently -- how it ends up is the same, I just did it a whole different way. Should I point out to the agent that Ch. 3 is a little different? Or let her find that out when she reads it?)
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Legionsynch on April 03, 2008, 11:04:07 AM
Congrats!

I only had one agent request the full off a partial, but she started reading from the beginning when she got the full.  I'd changed around parts of the  beginning, which she did notice and comment on.

Since agents read so much, odds are that they're going to reread starting from the beginning to refresh their memories of the story.  So I don't know that you necessarily HAVE to point it out (but you may want to just so it's clear).

Go get 'em Diane!  Exciting news ;D

And I agree with Lege too.  I can't even imagine agents trying to keep stories straight when they have SO many to read.  I know I would have to start at the beginning.
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Diane on April 03, 2008, 11:43:45 AM
I assume the agent would start from the beginning. (God knows I'd have to.) I'm just wondering if I should point, "Ahem, Ch. 3 is slightly different than what you read before," or send it off and say nothing.
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Bettie Sharpe on April 03, 2008, 11:59:57 AM
Don't say anything. Agents' brains are stressed enough without adding extraneous info. Let your story do the talking, and best of luck!
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: justwrite on April 03, 2008, 01:52:42 PM
Diane..i don't think it would hurt to tell the agent you made some slight changes. Why not? I not only made adjustments to my first 20 pages, but had changed my title in the interim!

And WOOT on the full from partial. That's a great sign!!!!

Ohmygosh.  I think I'm going cross-eyed from reading 41 pages of posts in the last hour or two. A belated congrats to JV.  Did JW ever get an offer of rep?  I might have scanned over her post???

I'm fortunate because I didn't have to wait over the Christmas holiday to hear JV's news, but yall's posts had me cracking up.  Very funny. I'm waiting on a phone conversation with an agent who e-mailed me over two weeks ago saying that I'd "written a fantastic novel" and she wanted to talk to me if I "wasn't already represented", so I totally understand how JW felt waiting for her agent (the Australian one? I might be confusing people) to get back to her.

Good luck to all waiting to hear back on fulls and partials.  Many of you have very awesome submission stats.  I'm envious.  :-)
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: justwrite on April 13, 2008, 12:43:36 PM
Hi brimfire,

Your stats sound promising. You might have missed that both Lege and Diane both have agents now.

Your phone call situation sounds good. My Australian agent did not love the latter part of my ms as much as she loved the first part. But apparently she loves it enough to have urged me to revise, hire an editor and resub her. She's informed me she is excited to read the revision, (which I think IS so much better) after the editor sees it. The editor has it, but probably won't be done for about three more weeks.

I've opted not to query until after this agent has had it as a two week exclusive, even though she didn't ask. I really want HER above all others.

So that's where I'm at.

JW

I got a request for full today from a very prestigious agency (I guess I'd call it my uneducated dream agent... it's not like I know the guy, but still...).  This agent requested my partial-- 50pp-- 25 days ago.  Since then, another great firm met with me and requested a rewrite.  So at the moment the novel is ripped open with major surgery underway-- blood and guts everywhere-- you know the kind.  But I think the result will be much better.

What to do?????  Here's how I'm leaning:  work my butt off for, say, three days.  The first 40% of the novel should be rebuilt and edited by Monday.  Then, reply to the message with that version.  HOWEVER-- the beginning of the book has changed somewhat.  CH3 became a prologue, most notably.  So... do I explain why I changed the beginning?  Or do I just send it without explanation?

Any advice would be appreciated!

T.
Title: Re: Request log
Post by: Diane on April 22, 2008, 04:37:31 PM
You know, I wondered about this issue -- I didn't do quite that big a surgery, but I did rewrite Ch. 3 totally. So when I sent the full to the agent I included a line in there about how "You may notice Chapter 3 is somewhat different; it ends up in the same place, it just takes a different route to get there."

In your case I would say, "Based on some feedback I have received, the opening to the book is a little different now, but I believe you will enjoy it more."

Nathan Bransford disagrees with me, btw: http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2255183&postcount=826

Belated, but, congrats, tradergirl! That's awesome!

I'm a little sad tonight :( I've gotten a few query rejections over the past couple of days, no biggie, still had two partials and a full out, but today, I got a partial rejection from an agent near the top of my list that I really had high hopes for. Her letter was really great, though. On the plus side, she said it reminded her of a nice cross between Buffy and Supernatural with a good father/daughter twist on it thrown in, and there were some elements she liked, but on the downside, she felt it jumped around and was a little disjointed, and she had trouble connecting with my MC. Oh well. I just have to work on the parts she didn't like and make them better for the next agent!

Summerspark - as much as rejection sucks it really is great that an agent took the time to give you notes - that is totally priceless, especially as it sounds like they were pretty specific and helpful notes.  Keep trying and don't forget you still have another partial and a (drumroll please) FULL!

There is an agency out there with a reputation for keeping manuscript boxes.  I heard the rumor on AW, submitted my full in a box as requested, and they sent the ms back sans box.  Not sure what they do with those boxes... Throw them away?  Use them to submit to publishers???

I have waited a long time to finally have a chance to report some good news on this request log. You have no idea how difficult it has been to read all the good news on this thread and not be able to report any of my own good news, but today is different. It turns out that how you market your novel has a lot to do with its success. I have some very good news to report.

I have recently received two rejections. But guess what? They were not from the same agent this time. That means both of these agents may be considering my backup submissions sent under my pseudonym Danuel Brown, which I sign D. Brown.  It is the same story, but my pseudonym must be making a difference. This could be it.

THE NOSTRA CODE by D. Brown could be in book stores soon. Call your favorite book store today and reserve your copy. If enough book stores start hitting up the publishers for a copy of THE NOSTRA CODE, and enough  publishers start hitting up literary agents for a book called THE NOSTRA CODE, guess what could happen. Yep, those literary agents will be knocking down my door.

Wouldn't it be funny if I turned out to be better at marketing than I am at writing. I guess the joke would be on me.

Nostra, I don't get it!  But brain is fried from five hours at various playgrounds in the hot sun with two tired preschoolers.

HEY DUDES.  The number of success stories jumped from 39 to 40 today, after a long hiatus.  Who's holdin' out on us?

Nostra, I don't get it!  But brain is fried from five hours at various playgrounds in the hot sun with two tired preschoolers.
TG

That is okay, Tradergirl. Often, I don't understand what I am writing. I'll try to explain it in more detail. You see when I send out a query, I actually send two queries to each agent, the second one is what I call my backup query. The first query has the real name of my novel and my real name on it. The backup query has a different name for the novel and I sign my letter using a pseudonym, Danuel Brown which I shorten to D. Brown to save space on the page. The name I use for the novel in the second query is always THE NOSTRA CODE by D. Brown. The fact that I have not received any rejections for my backup queries give me hope.

The second part of my marketing plan is for every one on QT to contact their favorite book store and request copies of THE NOSTRA CODE. Can you imagine what would happen if  hundreds of  thousands of requests for my book started hitting the book stores all across this country. The book stores would start calling the publishers requesting copies. Publishers would be trying to figure out which agent had the manuscript. What do you think will happen when agents start getting my queries then. Bingo, I'm in.

My complete strategy is explained in my non-fiction book THE IDIOT's GUIDE TO MARKETING YOUR NOVEL. This is what I meant by saying that I may be a better marketing person than a writer, but only time will tell.

I hope this helps.  :)

Thank you for asking.  Karma coming your way.

PS: I did get a rejection from Meredith Bernstein and she wrote with the publishing industry being what it is today ....... ( Well you can figure out the rest ) So I'm going to try and turn the publishing industry on its head and make the tail wag the dog for a change.

For all of you who do not know me, this is a joke, of course, but go ahead and call your book store today and request your copy THE NOSTRA CODE. Let's see what happens.

Title: Re: Request log

Yeah, I was pretty excited when I saw the number of successful QT users went from 39 to 40... There's a short discussion on the agent's page, but the writer is Karen Duvall (who's active on AW and various urban fantasy groups) and the agent is Elizabeth Winick.

I had my second kid by appointment.  Not a C-section, but an induced labor.  Back in the good old days of yore, they did that kind of thing.  Yeah, knighthood was in flower, too.

But, to the Request portion of this post...

I put a post on LJ lamenting my lack of agent interest on my absolutely wonderful MG fantasy.  I quoted two of my target audience who loved my book.  Essentially, the post was just to show (sour grapes) that kids loved my book.

I was just asked by a small publisher to submit my ms to them.  Agents?  Who needs them?  Well, I wish I had one, then I could actually make some money.

NEVERTHELESS, shout out to the public about your charming work.  You never know who might be reading your blog.

Miss J, two weeks is about five minutes in agent time. I sent my ms to uberagent two weeks ago and I'm not even thinking about an answer from her for another two weeks. However, I told myself if I don't here boo in another week, I'm going to start querying again. Which is exactly the same week I started LAST YEAR.

This week the email giveth and the SASE taketh away.  One full rejected (with a one line form letter).  One request for full.

If I do say so myself, I do a nice "kiss up" paragraph.  However this latest request was chosen on the grounds that the agent is: a man.  I seem to do better with male agents.  You know, until they read the MS, anyway.  So... no kiss up paragraph (too risky).  Go figure.

I received three more requests this weekend. So, that's five out in the world. Sent three more queries and now I'm done. I will be off line: no email, mail, phone, etc. until July 1st. I advised the latest requests that I would not be responding until after the first---so they didn't take a no reply from me as disinterest.

It's going to be hard to let go and have things play out while I'm away.

   Sliante!

Well, after giving uber agent a two-week grace period, I sent out about 8 queries. Got about four rejections and then, today, in the midst of the chaos of packing for summer another email appears on my email...a request for a full! From Maryl's agent!!!!  :)

Congrats, JW!  That is very exciting.

Fellow QTers, it sounds like the race is on.  Anyone want to place bets on who lands an agent next?

Will it be Coll?

JustWrite?

Or Tradegirl?

Any more nominations?

(All in fun, of course.)

SuzyQ will kill me for this because she's so low-key, but more than half the queries she's sent out have come back with requests for fulls.  Outrageous statistics considering the 3.6% full request average.   Fabulous query. Fabulous manuscript.  Fabulous person.

Sorry Suzy.  Bragging on you won't jinx you.  If you want me to pull this post, just let me know.   ;D

I owe it all to you guys.  You honed my query letter into a work of art.

Any of them and Wiggy of course!

How could I forget poor Wiggy?  She's had an uber-agent sitting on a full for 7 months.

The neatest thing is that it's not really a race or a contest.  We are all on the same team.

I predict great things - for all of us.  Someday we will look back at our humble beginnings, here on the forum, and smile.  And then we'll all go on the '08 QT alumni cruise/reunion arranged by Sarahjen.

P.S. Mary, you tooter-of-other-people's-horns...  I still love ya!  If you thought my horn needed tooting, it probably did.    :bear:  (I wanted to put on a giant-ant-eater-smiley but couldn't find one... I'll petition Patrick for it.)

P.P.S. Thanks TG and emjohns!

It would be cool! (to actual have an agent).

No! Don't root for or bet on me...last November everyone thought I'd be the first person on QT to land one— Yeesh...48 success stories along with three of my QT buddy originals getting agents later...I'm still waiting.

Anyway; I think Coll is totally due...her book is phenomenal. She and I are sort of linked.(we are both artists turned writers of YA fantasy)..and we have actually met at a conference before we met on here. So, I feel her good luck and mine are tied together. (especially since she did a rip-rooting job of editing my ms—twice).

Sent a query last night at 2AM of all things to a rather big agent who I had some how overlooked (out of fear, maybe?) and shazam—request for a full ten minutes ago..4:45 July 5th. It should be noted, that unlike my other request, i was too *skairt* to put the first two chapters in. So it doesn't mean as much as the other two, but at least my query is doing its job.

I'm in that state of perpetually almost there...I decided to go back and add in some scenes I needed and then I thought it would be a good idea to edit it before I wrote the ending since I haven't really done that yet with this one.  (I did it about 20 times with the last one)  I'm not stressing over it...I'm hoping to be done by Aug, but we'll see...

I refuse to suffer anymore. I'm querying every last agent there is (even some who rejected me last year when I had a different title and query) and then will apply my focus to the WIP which will hopefully be ready if the prior ms runs out of rope.

Nope...just a rejection on a query..then..ten seconds later, BAM, my brilliant critmate who's been querying her book for an entire year, with near misses, just like me, finally got her agent. That's four out of six agented in one crit group and 3 out of six in the other. I'm beginning to feel like a real wallflower...*sniff* but I am truly, truly thrilled for her.

Anything new with you?

That just means your time is coming.  It's inevitable!  It will happen!

Yeah, thanks. IThis has been going on for two years. And as some people on the forum know, it seemed like I was a hair's breadth away from landing a huge agent back in November, only to have the rug pulled out from under me. But my critmate's been down that road as well, so maybe it does mean I'm closer. I'm certainly not going to hold my breath, though...even with three fulls out.

You know, I can't recall if I've ever posted on the Request Log thread, so here it goes.

About four months total into querying THE CAIN LETTERS...

2 fulls
1 partial (rejected)
A bunch of other queries still out
A bunch of rejections

There you go.
