Title: What are your querying stats? Just curious :-)
Post by: Alniah on May 06, 2010, 08:38:31 AM
I am very curious (nosy me) but I was wondering how many agents people have been querying, what where their responses (rejections or submissions) and when did they start querying? I figured it would help get everyone motivated.

I'll go first off course:

First query sent: 03/30.
Total query sent: 12.
Partials: 1.
Rejections: 4.
Still waiting: 7 (including partial)

Should I send more? I feel like I am crawling when I hear people have sent hundreds!

I replied to this same question in the other thread...

My query statistics are pretty well known on this forum. Almost every literary agent has rejected me at least once.

With no where else to go, I started sending my queries directly to publishers. One publisher wrote back that I would be the last person they would publish.

When Kimmy wrote that the world is going to end in 2012, I wrote that publisher back and asked him if he still wanted me to be the last person they published.

He replied back, yes.

I sent him a copy of my manuscript and a copy of Kimmy's post.

I apologize if this should have been put on the success thread.

Okay, Kimmy. I can meet you down at the pier, where I work, Friday night at 12:00 o'clock sharp. That's when I usually take a break from writing. I'll be wearing a navy blue T-shirt, white cotton shorts, and sandals. That way I won't look anything like the thugs who hang around there. If any of them try to give you a problem, tell them you're my bail bondsman. They'll let you through.

What will you be wearing?

My usual, jeans and a Tshirt!  The Tshirt will have a sassy saying, but the saying depends on the day and my mood!

You guys are funny!

Is there another "Confess Your Stats" thread? I, too, have reached the end of the Internet.

Query Statistics
Sent = 281
Positive Responses = 19
Negative Responses = 107

Submission Statistics
Sent = 18
Positive Responses = 0
Negative Responses = 12

Nostrabuttus, you're always good for a laff.

For another laff to match your mood when asked about query stats, listen to "It's a Great Day to Woop Somebody'd Ass."

Not stopping--goal is to query 100. Then I'll take a breath. I feel good about what I've got, so why not? Just trying to be patient while I wait for responses. Not easy!

Go Lisa! Smart strategy. : )

I queried 212 agents with my last novel before retiring it gracefully to the shelf. Although it wasn't "the one", with all the exposure, I did receive agent feedback (even did an exclusive R & R with an agent) that made ALL the difference in the execution of my present novel.

To say the experience was invaluable is an understatement. It changed everything for me.

212!???

Phew--if I get to 150 I think I'll have scraped the barrel clean.

Lisa, are you out in the shark-infested waters again?? GO GIRL!

Here's my stats in a blog post I wrote this week: http://sarablarson.blogspot.com/2010/06/guest-post-elana-johnson-finish-strong.html

Phew--if I get to 150 I think I'll have scraped the barrel clean.

At that point you have to pick up the barrel and query the ones that slipped past you.

I think sending out over 100 queries is normal, but people don't like to talk about that.  It's a lot easier to admit that you married the 12th boy you kissed than the 200th.    ;D

For me with the 212, the effort was equivalent to how much I believed in my project and how hard I'd worked on it. I felt it deserved every last effort before being retired.

The 40 requests I received in turn opened the doors to agent feedback and conversation which helped shape my present project to closer fit industry standards. It also gave me the chance to get to know a few agents, who then asked for fulls when my next ms was ready.

I guess, in a nutshell, I was networking across novels. : )

Stats for this time around:

Q -- 30
Subs -- 6 fulls
Rej.s -- 3 (2 with feedback, 1 not taking on new clients)
The rest? Crickets.

Query Land is seeming awfully quiet this summer.

It sure is--for the 73 I've sent I've only heard from half--and of the it's one third request and one third reject. But until a month passes, I don't mark it as a no response. It's like sorting through a mound of hay for diamond chips! But they're in there somewhere, right?
