Title: New to QT Forum
Post by: martintj on July 18, 2010, 09:43:59 AM
I joined QT a few weeks ago, but just joined the forum recently. I am in the revision stages of my MS, but don't really know what I am doing. I just joined a local writers group, but we only meet monthly and I was hoping to move this along. I've gotten some good advice, but I still find myself reluctant to make major changes to the first draft.

I sent one query prematurely, but I did get a request for a partial.  That was rejected w/in 24hrs. so I am trying to focus on what went wrong in the first 30 pages (or was it really just not what the agent was looking for).  But thanks to sites like this, I have found that I have a long way to go to "polish" my MS.

I'm trying not to spend a lot of money on my project.  It is something I started for fun and I promised my husband it wouldn't cost much. Plus, I don't see the point in going to conferences until I get some feed back that indicates I might actually be able to be published.

So, I look forward to using all the resources available to me here on QT.

Thanks.

;D Hi martintj; I gave you your 1st karma!!! Big deal around here. I too didn't want to spend a lot of money on the project. My only costs were postage for the few snail mail queries I made (90% email) and computer supplies (ink, paper). Best of Luck!! newday11

Hi martintj! :welcome: Welcome to QT!

There's a free online conference coming up in August!  Check out http://writeoncon.com/ (http://writeoncon.com/).

Also, on my blog, I pick out the most useful writing posts for the day (out of the 100 + I follow ) and link back to them.  I've learned a lot from agent and editor posts, as well as from other writers.

Karma to you!

Hi Martinij,

I spend $200 on a consultant -- but that was before I found Query Tracker and Absolute Write. There's lots of great free advice here.

Good luck.

welcome martintj - karma to you.  as some of the other QTers said, it shouldn't cost you much at all to write.  I haven't submitted a query to one non-email agent yet.  $ for paper & ink cartridges is about it.  Good luck to you.

Welcome Martintj, I am new here to. What genre do you write? When I finally decided to write I searched for on-line critique groups. I found the best one ever and in the past year, my writing has grown by leaps and bounds. Best education ever. Better than any classroom or seminar. I joined Rom-Critters for writers of all genres of romance or a story with romantic elements. It's a yahoo group.

Feel free to check out the blog my crit partner and I created. A place for writers to vent, joke, laugh and learn about the process. We have links to great websites for aspiring authors.

Best of luck and GOOD KARMA TO YOU!

Thanks for all the welcomes.  I am honestly not sure what I write.  I wrote the MS first and now I have to worry about what genre it fits into.  I was very happy to see St. Martin's Press trying to promote the "New Adult" genre, because that is the age group my MS is aimed at.  Other than that I guess you could say it is Paranormal with romantic elements (but no vampires.)

Hey, it sounds like you have your genre nailed: Paranormal Romance.  I hear that's hot at the moment.  :naughty:

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

I'm new to martintj. I belong to a wonderful crit group called Rom-Critters. The first thing I learned is that you have to be able to take constructive criticism. Its the only way to learn and hone your craft. But denial is always the first response LOL

Cheers! :-)

Welcome to the forum, martintj.  Finding the funds to write can be difficult, but more often the free time can also be a challenge.  Sorry I didn't welcome you earlier...I had the flu.  Good luck with your project.   :welcome: :hooray:
