Title: Urban Fantasy Title [Help Needed!]
Post by: BrwnEyedGirl on May 04, 2011, 06:43:30 PM
I wrote a Urban Fantasy, and now I am unhappy with the bland title I came up with.   :badday:

It's basically about a lycan female, trying to live a normal life.  She is trying to overcome her desire for human flesh, while avoiding the wrath of another lunatic lycan.  The whole story is about her overcoming hard-ship and coming out of it alive.

The original title was "Blood Moon" but I find it to be quite bland.   [I want something original with more flare]

I want a dark gothic style title that would be sure to grab a potential book reader's attention.

I am open to every suggestion, so if you think you can help me with my title picking woes, I welcome you!

Thanks in advance for your help!  ;D

hmmm dark Goth...first thing that came to my mind was

BLACK LACE

I think that's because black lace seems very goth to me...lol

I remember your story. Isn't she running from a murderous pack of lycans?  How about "Blood Clan"?

Tabris,

Yes, you probably remember my story because you helped me with the query.  Which have resulted in a full request!  I wanted to thank you for that, but i've been busy re-editing the story itself [still not done -_-].  But I like both yours and Elizafaith's title suggestions.

Black Lace - I really enjoy, because it has the perfect element of gothic feel that I am looking for.

Blood Clan - I like also, because it fits the story line.

Hmm... a tough decision here. =p

Last night I was thinking about something like this.  Blood Moon : Unleashed  but I wasn't sure about it....any suggestions???

As always, thank you guys so so so much for helping me.  I truly appreciate it!  :y:

 P.S

If anyone has an idea I am still open to suggestions!  The more the merrier! n_n

How about something more prehistoric-feeling, like Saber-Toothed Fighter. Saber-Toothed Vixen. Something more specific, animalistic and focused on her?

What do you think of these potential titles?

1. Deadly Vengeance

2. Lycan Vengeance

3. Murmuring Hunger

I have more, but I don't want to overwhelm anyone. =p

Those three feel kind of generic. You want a title that wouldn't fit 30% of the books out there.

I went through about 21 titles before the right one came to me, and when it did it felt perfect. Keep free-associating. See if there are any word pairings in the text itself that feel titleish.

:'(  Yeah you're probably right.  Oh well, I still have time to think of one before I sign with an agent.  Thanks as always Tabris for your wonderful help and support.

Keep working at it. Seriously, it took me 18 months for the perfect title, but when it came...well, it's perfect.  :wag: You'll get one too. And your agent may change the title, and the publisher almost definitely will change it again.

CHeck out this little how-to on how to title your book: http://cba-ramblings.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-to-title-your-book.html

Title's are tough. I went through a few before finally deciding on one.

One tip that helped me was to put in titles in Amazon and see how many other similar titles were out there. I kind of liked Murmuring Hunger. Blood MOon is good to, but there are a lot of BLood  titles.

Just throwing out possibilities rather whimsically, lol.  Perhaps the problem is you're too focused on trying to find a certain 'type' of title, ie a dark gothic, and so you're cutting yourself off from a lot of avenues that might end up surprising you with a good match?

TOOTH AND NAIL (or is it claw?)
HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF (ok ok, so a Duran Duran title isn't what you're looking for, but who could resist!?)
HUNGERS OF THE FLESH (Hmm, sounds like zombie porn, so maybe not)
DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (Ok, we've progressed to a Pink Floyd song, so a slight improvement in the theme/tone match)
A LUNACY OF LYCANS (apparently I am channeling George R. R. Martin here...)
MIDNIGHT HOWLS (hmm something with midnight might actually have potential...)
HOWLS AT MIDNIGHT (never mind, I'm just stuck on howl now)
RUNNING FROM THE PACK (aaaaaaand we're back to song references and have 'The Leader of the Pack' stuck in our heads - and we're also talking in the third person and not sure when or why that happened....)
SOMETHING LIKE MADNESS (and not sure where in the hell that came from or what it has to do with the price of tea in china or what the hell the price of tea in china has to do with anything either, so that might me a sign I'm being useless here and its time to bow out.  Au revoir, all.)

By jove I think I found a title.

After talking it over with my sister [who is also writing a novel] we both decided that we like "Tooth and Nail"

So thank you KalenO for your sarcastic and sometimes confusing commentary, it made me laugh.   ;D

Once again, thank you Tabris, Elizafaith13, KalenO and DMcWild for your help!  You guys are awesome.  :naughty:

I'm going to be a pain, but would you also consider "Tooth And Claw"?

 --> http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/red-in-tooth-and-claw.html

That was my first thought when I saw the new title, because "tooth and nail" tends to just mean a struggle, but "tooth and claw" refers specifically to the more violent side of the natural world.

Tabris,

I was actually thinking about that same thing!  I agree that "tooth and nail" didn't exactly fit.  I was considering titlting it "Tooth and Claw" or "Blood and Fangs" I haven't decided yet.  HOWEVER, I know I am also a pain but I was thinking about another title.

"Primal Vengeance"

Yes / No /Maybe So?

As always thanks for participating everyone!

It's YOUR novel. YOU get to decide the title -- by definition, the author in search of a title can never be a pain. LOL!

"Primal Vengeance..."  It sounds like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.  ???  It kind of works, but I'm not sure it feels unique-ish. (Critics of titles are, by definition, a pain. Sorry.) See what the other people say.

LOL!  Tabris you crack me up.

I really appreciate all that you have done for me.  I can never thank you enough.  I don't consider you a pain, I consider you my fairy Query mother.   :emb2:  But I am going to keep working towards a title that isn't generic.  [HAH I am totally reaching for the stars with that one.]

I am going to post the first couple of revised pages of my Urban in the query section if you want to take a look.  Until then, thanks as always!

I am totally ready to pull my hair out.  :'(

There are some of the titles I came up with....again.  Please vote for your favorite or come up with one of your own.

To give you a better idea of the story I am using the query for this story.  Courtesy of Tabris.

With her life in jeopardy, Aubrielle Brahams can either run or fight back. She chooses to fight -- with fangs and claws bared.

Ten years ago, Aubrielle fell in love with the wrong man. When he bit her, she abandoned her life as a human and joined a pack of human-preying Lycans, but she didn’t understand what it would mean to be different.  Derrick Malcolm, the cunning alpha male of the human preying pack took her in, and taught her what it meant to be a Lycan -- taught her all the wrong ways.  And after years of blood, death, and dealing with the bizarre deaths surrounding her lying boyfriend she’s had enough.  Now she sees the truth, and things were going to change.  Permanently.

When Aubrielle saves the life of a human child, she ends up killing Derrick in the struggle.  His twin brother vows for revenge.  Now the target of a ruthless killer, Aubrielle must constantly look over her shoulder, sniffing the air for his scent.  But now, hidden in the city and trying to overcome her desire for human flesh, she must forge a new "normal" life while evading the killer who's sure to seek vengeance.

As always thanks in advance.

1. Paint in Blood
2. The Red Morning
3. The Hunger She Knows
4. The Craving
5. The Mirror of Fate
6. Bood Beginnings
7. Crimson Conflict or Veneance
8. Dangerous Muse
9. Deadly Intrigue
10. The Devil's Dawn

!!  OMG I love that title!

I knew I could count on my query God mother! LOL!  But last night, I was discussing titles....again with my sister.  We came up with one that we both liked.

Tooth and Nail(s)

But now that I saw the one you suggested I like them both!  :'(

Which do you think???  As always THANKS SO MUCH! <3

Dwell on them. Roll them around in your head. Say them out loud. Google them. Live with them. Write them both on your manuscript. Sketch the covers in crayon on a sheet of scrap paper. Fall in love, and marry that one. Even if it's not something that's already been suggested.

It's YOUR book. You get to bestow its first name.  :wag: :inocent:

Yay!  After a tiresome four days of thinking I am finally happy with Blood and Nails.

I think it fits to gore and the lycan parts of my story perfectly.

Thank you guys so so much for all your help!

Google them.
and look for it in amazon.com -see if there's a book with that name, or similar names.
If there isn't- you have something original.
