Hi!
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:08:54 PM »
Not really new, but it's been a couple of years since I last posted, so I thought I should reintroduce myself. I've been writing for about three years and I'm getting ready to jump back into querying after spending the last year and a half rewriting, then rewriting again my current baby. Third time's the charm, right? *fingers crossed*

Great community here! Glad to be back! :)

Hi abby.  Did you ever have any luck with that query contest with Suzie Townsend?   :write:
I gave it a shot... and got shot down!
Thanks again for posting it.

Hi WhiteGardenia,

Sorry you got shot down.

Suzie turned me down, too. She wrote, "you're not showing enough about [your mc] to make me want to follow her and her story. She needs more personality in your query." Which I think I revised all the voice out of the stupid thing trying to make it "perfect" before sending it in for the contest.

Very helpful feedback, and I've revised since then, but I've been too chicken to query her again. She's at the top of my list, so I don't want to blow my last chance.

Did you try querying her again after the contest?

No, I haven't requeried yet.  Still fine-tuning.

Although my current project is finished, it's not polished.  I was relieved in a way that she didn't request it, because it wasn't perfect--I would have done a rush job.  I hadn't even had anyone test-read it yet.

And her comments on my query letter made me realize I was being way too secretive about my plot.  I didn't give her enough to go on.  All her comments were questions to me about why she would want to read it... lol...

Going to really have to take a look at it again.  My main reason for entering was simply to get some feedback on the query, which I got.  So, even though I didn't get a request for my ms, I still have the opportunity to requery later.  And ditto about her being at the top of the list.  I don't want to blow it with her either, so I just edit, edit, edit.

I really wonder if December is a good month to query--end of the year and all...  Another lifetime ago, I was a Realtor.  Not many people wanted to buy or sell in December, then bam-- along came January.
