Should I query for book two??
« on: December 14, 2011, 02:49:38 PM »
Hey everybody!!

So excited that the first book of my trilogy landed a pub contract (and all of you here were super supportive and wonderful about it btw). I had been in an agent querying frenzy when I thought to query a small press I had had my eye on for the last couple years, and they picked it up. I'd love to publish book two and three with said publisher, but I'm wondering if I should continue my search for an agent as well?

I'm very serious about making this my career, and I know at some point, to get in with the big hot shot publishers in NY, I'll need an agent. Is now the right time? Or should I wait until I've published all three of the books with the small press so I can move on without any complications?

The only reason I'm considering what may seem as jumping the gun is because I would like to begin building a writer/agent relationship. And who knows? The publisher may not be interested in book two and three, so it may be good to have an agent in my corner.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Alythia, can I ask who the small press is and what genre? If you dont want to post it publicly, you can send me a message, or just not say if you want to wait till all the contract stuff is done. Im just curious, because I have seen a few QTers do well with smaller presses and so many of us fighting to get an agent and our piece of the bigger publishers that it makes me wonder which route is better. Best of luck to you!

Don't mind at all. It's Crescent Moon Press. Here, check out their sub guidelines: http://crescentmoonpress.com/submissions.html

I highly recommend small presses--especially for new authors. This is the second small press I've worked with (the other being Wyvern Publications http://www.wyvernpublications.co.uk/), and I've had a great experience with both so far. Both of them rejected me at first, but sent a letter explaining why--that was HUGE. When I resubmitted, they accepted.

There's definitely a catch 22 in publishing. Publishers want an author with an agent. Agents want published authors (not always, but they do prefer it). I think the small presses kind of give you a teeny tiny foot in the door! Good luck to you too!

Kimmy, I just realized you were the one asking about them before. Did you have any luck?
