One small step in agentland, one giant step for Alniah ?
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:46:37 AM »
Hey guys! Long time no see.
Here is the run down of what happened with a specific agent (a wonderful one may I add). I posted about what happened on here before but to make things short, agent requested partial, then full, then R&R. R&R was completed just under 2 months, R&R was sent. Touched base with agent a few weeks later, she stated she did not have my R&R in her to read list (bummer). We exchanged a few emails (mind you, something like 20 of them) during which agent said she loved the book but was concerned about similarities with the Hunger Games. I thanked her for her feedback and marked it as a rejection. Trunked the novel. Queried said agent with an other project. She requested the MS. Saw a quick video of agent on the Backspace Conference website and contacted the agent about it. She answered me saying that she was still thinking about my characters (good thing, right? She didn't read the MS since last May). So she said that she is still concerned about the similarities with the Hunger Games but she asked me to send her the updated full, synopsis and bio, and that she would ask an editor friend of hers to take a look.

Sooooooooooo, thoughts?

:surprise:  If she'd still thinking about it after six months, she's impressed!  :woo:

Considering how many manuscripts she's read since then, that's a monumental sign.  After all, Hunger Games sold quite well.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Congrats on the continued interest!  Does this editor work for a publisher? Is the agent shopping your book without really representing you? I'm not sure how that works. Good luck!  Hopefully it's a giant step.

Wow! That's great  I've heard many agents say they're looking for manuscripts they can't stop thinking about so this is a very good thing!

It's wonderful that she still thinks about your characters. That says a lot about your writing! I'd keep querying nevertheless. I had many close calls with agents who said that my book was too similar to a comic book series. It's not really--just passing similarities (probably the same thing you're having. I'd bet a boatload that your book is truly *nothing* like Hunger Games.) In the end, a different agent and an editor loved my book and when I mentioned the comic book thing, they were like, "Uh, but it's nothing like that!"

Exactly.

So you see, it's in the eye of the beholder. In any case, that kind of interest is really great!

Thanks for the congrats and encouragements guys! Will keep you posted.
I am not hoping for much since I trunked this novel a few months ago but hey, I really appreciate her taking the time to do this.

That's so great!!! I hope it works out for you.

I agree that's incredibly telling that she's still thinking about your characters. Speaks quite a bit to your story and your writing. Fingers are crossed for good news!!!!!
