question about live pitching at a conference
« on: July 24, 2012, 07:39:10 AM »
If you had two books ready to query, and pitched Book 1 to an agent, would you, if the agent passed, ask, "Want to hear about my other book?"

Or is that hideously bad form, regardless of any rapport you and the agent might have built?

In that situation, I've prepared pitches for both and on settling down, said to the editor, "Which book would you like to hear about, {genre} or {genre}?"

But the most recent time I did it, I had one I launched into and kept the other one in reserve and mentioned it later. Both times the first one was requested, so I mentioned the second afterward to let them know I wasn't a one-trick pony.

Thanks, Tabris - that's a great idea. I hadn't considered mentioning the second if the first was requested, but I can see the logic in your I'm-no-one-tirck-pony strategy. Smart!

Ha. You're always very modest, but there appears to be a large segment of us out here who believe you're *amazing.* And more than that, you're always so willing to share your sage insights with us. Very, very cool. Thanks.  :)

Best answer! T brought it.

Having just hit ThrillerFest, (more than you ever wanted to know: coming soon!) I can attest to her tips. The comment that got me the most-est points was, "I have another with this protag completed, a third with another protag/same uni completed and I'll keep writing this if I never get published, cause it's fun and stuff."

That got a full request from the agent I want most-est. I would add: know when the pitch isn't working, ie too much explanation of your protag's motivation/world/goals. I wasted TOO MUCH time with two agents who didn't "get" what I do. On number three, I demured from DOW, thanked Princess Notso Bright and moved on to DREAM AGENT. Have I mentioned the full? Buona fortuna and do let us know which/where/how on the Conferences board.
