Agents who rep controversial or disturbing works.
« on: May 12, 2014, 08:13:21 AM »
I have written a difficult and painful memoir regrading my own childhood sexual abuse and the impact it had on me throughout my life (including a difficult legal battle in my late 30s).  I have gotten many rejections. After reviewing the rejecting agents' books that they have repped, I think my subject may have been a bit dark for them (several have basically said "this is not for me").

Does anyone have any recommendations for an agent who has a specific interest in the darker side of humanity?

With all the great resources out there (like this site), I still think there's no substitute for looking in the acknowledgements of books in the same vein as your own. There are a lot of stellar agents out there with very low profiles.

I agree with Mooky.

And the 'not for me' rejection is pretty much standard. People like reading the dark stuff, or there wouldn't be any on the shelves. I write dark stuff myself, and only once did I receive a rejection based on the actually material. The agent told me that I have a great way with words, but the content was too close to personal for her. And then she gave me the name of another agent, which turned into a full request, which turned into a Revise & Resubmit. So....

Yeah i would look in the acknowledgments of any similar books. I would also use the who reps whom reports on QT if you know the names of any memoirists who have written similar stories.

I think those options are probably going to be your best bet

Thank you all for your quick responses.  I am new to this, so all the input is appreciated.

That being said, in all honesty, Mooky, I really could have used a little more cow bell with your response.  :)

I agree. Find 25 similar memoirs and start with the agents who repped those. Good luck with it.

Check out this book:

This lady had what was basically an affair with her father and then wrote a memoir about it, to critical acclaim. She's a beautiful writer. How's that for controversy? Check out her website and agent, maybe it will lead you down that track.

Wow!  Thanks for the tip.  Amanda Urban is not taking new clients at the moment. :(  But I will keep an eye on her.
