Agent can't connect
« on: May 09, 2014, 07:48:29 PM »
Has anyone received the rejection that the agent can't connect to the story?
I have rec'd two rejections from partials and one said they couldn't connect to the story and the other agent couldn't connect to the premise. I'm not sure what this means, anyone know?

It is not something you can change or act upon. It simply means the book didn't compel them to offer representation. Like when you pick up a book in the bookstore and put it back down, not because there is something wrong with it, but because it doesn't fit what you are looking for at that moment.

It's basically a form rejection. Sorry.  :sad2:

yeah this just means it wasn't working for them as a whole. I'm currently reading a book thousands of people seem to love, but the voice isn't doing it for me, therefore I'm not connecting with it. publishing is very subjective. What one agent/editor will hate another will love

What everyone else said.

Pretty much when you get a rejection like that (and most likely you will get A LOT of rejections like that) there's no real point in reading into them or trying to figure out what they meant. Because what they meant was, it just wasn't for them.

My first rejection told me "the writing just didn't pull me in." I was crestfallen. There may be some things not to like, but the quality of the writing wasn't something I was particularly worried about. Then I looked at comments on the QT main site discovered that was the agent's form rejection. I was relieved and annoyed at the same time.

So I wouldn't read a thing into that language.
