Partial request asking for exclusive/can't grant exclusive
« on: July 07, 2015, 04:58:35 PM »
So, just to prove I'm not out of the game yet I guess, I got a partial request on BOTR but they asked for an exclusive if possible. Since it's not possible as I have eight other requests and 2-some queries out, do I just say that?

I bet I know who that is, too. :-) When I got that one, I also had several fulls and partials out, so I wrote back thanking the agent but explaining that I couldn't grant exclusivity on the grounds that several other agents had it. I asked what the agent would prefer I do: send the manuscript now and promise to notify her immediately of any offers, or wait until everyone else had finished reading. Predictably she asked for the first option.

Some writers would advocate just sending it and explaining in the letter that you can't grant the exclusive but promising notification etc. I thought it was better to give the agent the choice so she wouldn't feel deceived if she didn't open the email right away and thought she had an exclusive when in fact she didn't.

Just say something like:

I'm so excited to get your request for a partial of BOTR!
Unfortunately, beacause it's out with other agents, I can't grant an exclusive at this time. But I have attached it below per your request.

That way, it doesn't give them a chance to say no. I've only had one exclusive request that still said she'd wait after i sent an email like that. The rest said no problem!

Tabris and I posted at the same time.

Her advice is also spot on and probably a bit more polite

Either way is polite. When we're in this position, we just need to be clear and up-front about the non-exclusive issue.

Well I did it your way and she said that was totally fine and she was looking forward to seeing my work. :)
