Good or Bad - Bookbaby?
« on: December 01, 2015, 10:51:55 AM »
Hi.  Am about to push the send button on my book and was wondering if anybody had anything to note about Bookbaby.  Heard some distressing stuff about sales figures and was wondering if times had changed or anybody had good experiences with them.  Otherwise, I'm going with Smashwords and Amazon.  Thanks!

Haven't heard much one way or the other about Bookbaby, but if you're going with Smashwords and Amazon, also look into Draft2Digital. I like them a lot.

Absolutely I know! But it gets easier the more you do it. Um, I may or may not have my daughter click "publish" for me on some of my books. :-)

Don't. Bookbaby are a waste of money.

They charge you for every tiny change (like price, amending a file, updating blurb) that is free if you go direct to Amazon or use D2D. You lose all control over your book, and are reliant on them reporting sales & royalties. If you are gong to self publish why would you hand control and all the data you need, to someone else?

I'd go with Amazon and Smashwords. We know Amazon is legit, and I've heard nothing but good things about SW. And I think they're both free and they put your book up everywhere BookBaby does.

Good luck, TB,
JP

I'm exclusively with Amazon, and the experience has been great. CreateSpace for paperbacks.

Thank you all for your advice.  After several mind-blowing attempts to do it right, finally did Amazon direct and got War in Serendipity out this afternoon.  What an experience!  And I thought (stupidly) the hard part was over.  :)

Thanks all of you for your good wishes and Karma!  So glad I have other writers like you all to give the best advice!

Lots of good buzz on D2D. Have you read David Gaughran?

I didn't know they nickel and dimed like that but they did come across as pricey.

I just put the time in and learned to do the tech myself. It's another part of the craft and all the more reason to be proud of my work. Plus, I do less screaming with impotent rage about people keeping my titles beyond my control.
