Would the phrase "magical retelling" be a turn off to agents?--as in: BLANK BOOK is a magical retelling of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. I want to imply that my manuscript is a retelling with magical elements. Is that how I should word it--a retelling with magic? Perhaps I've answered my own question, as "magical retelling" sounds both pretentious and inexperienced.

No, I don't think so at all. I think it makes very clear what you're doing with your manuscript.

That helps a lot, Sarah. Thank you. Perhaps I'm overthinking it.

Yeah, probably, at least from what you included in your first post. (I overthink things ALL THE TIME)

It might help to include a good comp or two, if you're worried.

I think calling it a fantasy retelling would be a safe way to go. The confusion might be coming from whether the "magical" part is being used to describe the genre or the Amazing, Knock-Your-Socks-Off, Positively Magical Manuscript. Smiley

I'm with you, Emily! Sam, I think "fantasy retelling" is the way to go. It sounds like a fun book. Good luck!
