I'm thinking about making mugs, shirts, etc. using the cover of my book and what I write in autographed books. Instead of spending a lot of money on items which may or may not sell, and I can't afford the risk of not making back my money,  I thought I'd use a print on demand site to create and sell them. What do you think?

I think in the sense that you might carry a couple to signings and cons etc, and then you might sell others to people who have read your book that sounds like a pretty solid idea.

just remember that a print on demand site obviously charges a little more per item and do a cost comparison to make sure you can't get it cheaper overall.
