Do I let an agent know about alternative publishing?
« on: January 08, 2020, 01:58:10 PM »
After holding onto a book for about two years, lots of edits, and an embarrassing amount of rejections, I have decided to self-publish. I have self-published three books previously with varying success.  This time I am more optimistic and have plans on how to market my novel. That being said, there are two agents who have my full manuscript. There is one agent, in particular, I am not sure if I should let her know. She has had it since June and has not responded to a follow-up email I sent at the end of November about whether she received the manuscript (there was no confirmation). Let her know, or not worry about it?

If your plan is definitely to self-publish, you should probably send a courtesy email.

I'd say something like,

Dear [Agent],

Thank you so much for requesting more material of MANUSCRIPT. I have decided to withdraw this manuscript from consideration. Thanks again for your time.

You don't have to say you're self-publishing it if you don't want to.

Yeah, I would just withdraw at this point. No need to tell them why.
