Querying in 2020
« on: November 11, 2020, 01:44:14 PM »
Is it just me, or is querying really slow right now? I've only been at it for about a month this time around...but still. *Crickets*

What's your strategy? Forge ahead in the trenches? Or wait until the timing's "better?" I've heard some agents say they're especially focused on their current clients right now, given everything that's going on, but should we assume our queries will eventually get noticed?

Asking for a friend  :)

It definitely feels a lot slower this year! You (or your friend) are not alone!

Yep... it feels sooooo much slower to me this time (I'm seeking new representation after switching genres). It's tough, not just because being patient can be difficult, but because it's hard knowing whether you should be doing things like closing out queries and sending out new ones or whether the agents are just taking twice as long to respond as usual, and you will eventually hear something. It's thrown off my querying instincts and makes me feel far less experienced than I am!

Thank you so much for your responses — it’s so reassuring to know it’s not just me! Anwynnauthor, I totally get having your query instincts thrown off — usually if I’m not getting responses, I tinker with my query, or dive deep into researching more agents, but that’s assuming the problem’s with me. This time around is so hard to know!!!! But so helpful to think if others are having the same experience, maybe trying for patience (and a bit of relaxing) is the way to go, for now. Cmac, I meant asking if anyone could relate, not that I’m actually asking for a friend of mine (I realize now that probably didn’t make any sense!!)

😀 I knew you were joking about asking for a friend.
And yeah, it’s definitely making me second guess my query/opening pages. All we can do is be patient, I suppose—(and eat leftover Halloween candy).
