Your Second Chance
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:29:25 PM »
Dear Mr. Weston,

What would you do to save your family from an unspeakable fate?  In Your Second Chance, that's the question circumstance asks of Jack Weston (who lives at 1338 Canbury Street, New York, 10152), a successful literary agent for thiller writers.

After his wife Susan (who works from home every day except for Thursdays, when she drives to the secluded community garden plot she maintains) is abducted, Jack attempts to involve the police.  But he soon realizes that someone on the force is helping his nameless tormentor, and decided he can best help his family by agreeing to whatever demands are made of him.

In order to assure the safety of his troubled son Peter (who is doing poorly in junior high, has a secret addiction to painkillers, and has contacted a Swedish clinic about gender reassignment), Jack agrees to immediately take on his mysterious new client, who writes under the pseudonym "Y. Truly".  When his manuscript is bought by a publisher, Truly promises, Susan will be freed unharmed.

But Jack thinks he can outsmart Truly, even without the cops, and so attempts a heroic rescue.  But this goes terribly wrong, and Jack is responsible for the horrible fate Susan suffers, as well as what happens to Peter, which is too graphic to detail here.  Jack heartily wishes he'd never tried anything of the sort, and that he'd gone along with Truly.

Really.  He regrets messing with Y. Truly for the entire end of the book, asking himself why he ever did anything so stupid, and swearing that if he ever magically got a second chance, he wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

Got that?

Sincerely,

Y. Truly

Dude, this is the funniest thing in the world. Really. I'm printing it out and putting it on my wall. You know . . . as a last resort.
