A Call with an Agent
« on: February 08, 2010, 02:44:00 PM »
Hi everyone! I'm a lurker here, but first time posting.

So I managed to get 2 full requests over the past few weeks; one of them came back within days to schedule a phone call with me. (!!!) Anyone know what I should expect? Will we just have a conversation about my ms and what she thinks needs work? Should I be prepared for anything else?

Thanks!

My guess is she's going to offer representation. Yay! But you need to think about the working relationship you may have with her. Others who are more experienced at this may have more detailed suggestions, but here are some things you should discuss:

Does she want revisions? To what extent? What kind?

What does she envision in terms of marketing this book? Will she stick with you if the book doesn't sell on the first go-around?

How often does she notify her clients of rejections? Does she send you the editors' comments? (Some writers want them; some don't.)

How is the bookkeeping handled? Is there a written contract, or is business done on a handshake?

What about a termination clause in the event that you come to a parting of the ways?

If you have future projects in mind, you also need to bring them up. Does she seem enthusiastic?

She may want to know if you have other offers. If you have a full out, you need to contact the other agent and give her a chance to talk to you, too.

Just my thoughts... And, congrats!

My first thought was representation. She isn't calling to say your book sucks.

I think she'll likely ask for you to make changes to your manuscipt and wants to see how you react. If you disagree with her (and you might -- it's your story), then she may not want to represent you.

I say think of this as a job interview. If you impress the agent, they will want to work with you.

Some other thoughts about questions they'll ask you:
1. He/she might also just be testing you out to see if you're a good fit for the agency, re: making sure you're someone they can really work with.
2. Are you open to revisions?
3. Do you have plans for future books or is this a one shot deal?
4. If this a book in a series, how fleshed out are the other books?
5. She'll probably want details about who else has your MS, how many people is it out with, and what feedback from agents you've gotten so far.
6. And if there's an offer that comes, here's a link to another lucky QTer where I asked a zillion questions about that, and she was nice enough to humor me...

if the link doesn't work, it's under Success Stories, poster was Claena. Around Sept I think.
Good luck! And congrats on getting the call!

My guess it's one of three things:

1) S/he's calling to make an offer--most likely.
2) S/he's calling to say what works and what doesn't...and ask if you're interested in doing some revisions.
3) I have read a few instances where an agent has called to say that while they loved the ms for a variety of reasons, they're going to pass. Sad, but true.

The questions you got from above are great! Good luck to you and keep us posted!

I agree with the others. Agents hardly ever call if they're not interested. I mean, they don't make money unless they sell your book, so they don't have time for phone calls for people they're not interested in working with.

Casey McCormick posted about the call today

And Carolyn and I did some posts (two) on the QT blog.

You are all INCREDIBLY helpful--thank you so much!!

I should have mentioned, her email back to me did say she thinks my ms needs some revisions. The great thing is, I'm excited to see what she thinks needs work, and I am more than willing to do the work!

Seriously, thank you all so much. I will be printing out these suggested questions in advance of the meeting!!

Well, it was a great conversation...he didn't offer representation, but we had a fantastic talk about my ms and what works/doesn't and suggested revisions. Wants to be kept in the loop and was very curious as to how many others had my full and partials etc. So, on to revisions! I'm really excited about it and will definitely be working closely with him over the next few weeks.

Thanks all!
