Update on my partial to full
« on: April 23, 2010, 05:17:16 PM »
The agent got back to me this week. She said she enjoyed reading the story very much and complimented me on my characters. She said they were very strong and the voice and dialogue were spot on for the YA market. She gave me several suggestions (which I completely agreed with) and offered me a revise and resubmit invitation. I get the feeling this agent is somewhat cautious to offer rep before knowing how a writer works (i.e. if they can handle revision requests, are willing to actually DO them, etc), by the way she requested material (she went from partial, to slightly larger partial, to full). She said that once I get going on the revisions, if I had any questions for her she would gladly answer them and if I wanted, we could set up a time to talk on the phone to discuss some possible ideas. Please, someone tell me this is a good thing! Because I'm not quite sure at this point!! It seems like a good thing, I mean, why would she offer so much help if this wasn't a project she was interested in...?

Anywho, I'm doing the revisions because I felt she was spot on, and am really loving the changes so far! They weren't 'hard' revisions, but to make them work with my story line, I'm having to do quite a bit of rearranging of scenes. Not so much rewriting as much as just the switching up of stuff. Then a few little adds here and there for flow and to up the danger and feeling of urgency to my MC. So, that's my update. :D

I think this is a great thing!!  Congratulations!  Like you said, it just sounds like she's cautious, but she even said you could call her to talk over ideas.  That sounds quite a bit like what having her as an actual agent would be like.  (Wouldn't know really, but it's what I dream it will be like ;D)  Yay for you!

Much better to work with an agent who wants to help you with revisions than to accept an offer from an agent who thinks the ms. is perfect as is (when it needs work) and then floods the market with unsuccessful submissions.

Congrats! This is great news.

This is very good news, ajc! Lots of "how I got my agent" stories begin in just this way. This person wants to keep you in her loop, which is a terrific sign.

However, I'd suggest you keep querying! (Personally, I know I'd be tempted run right over to the henhouse and count those chickens myself.) Keep your work out there in front of other eyes and generate more interest if you can, because that will make Agent #1 even more invested in offering you help and keeping your project in her sights.

Just my tuppence. . .

Thanks everyone! I hope it's good news!

I have kept querying (since she's been asking for material). So don't worry about that, LOL! I actually have several other partials and fulls out right now! I am going to take a querying break while I revise because I really believe the revisions are going to make it 100 times better (and I already think it's pretty good!). I just don't want to get another request and not have the revision ready, you know? But, as soon as I finish it I'll query more AND send her the revision. :D

Great news! I think it's awesome that the agent wants to offer help and a chance for you to revise and resubmit.
