IS THIS A JOKE OR WHAT?
« on: June 19, 2010, 05:01:53 PM »
OK, so maybe I'm feeling a tad disgruntled (due to multiple rejections) - can I blame it on the heat?  Anyway, below are the guidelines for a well known agency.  Just how many hoops do they expect us to jump through?  I'm sorry, is it me?  This reeks of an agent wanting writers to do a good deal of their job for them.    :sad2:  What do you guys think?

Guidelines for your query:

DO:

    * Write a fabulous query letter
    * Tell us why you chose our agency
    * Tell us why this book has an audience, and why you're the one to write it
    * Include information about your credentials to write this book, publications and prizes, awards, and conferences
    * Know the competition and describe those titles
    * Tell us which well-known writer's work yours most clearly compares to
    * Keep your letter under two pages
    * You can include a double-spaced table of contents and overview (non-fiction)
    * You can include a double spaced 1st chapter (fiction)
    * Tell us if you are submitting to more than one agency
    * Always include a SASE for snail mail queries
    * Please be sure to provide us with your email, phone number, and address.
    * Read the books on how to find an agent - there are several. There is much valuable information that will help you throughout this process.

DON'T

    * Refer me to your website for a reading sample.
    * Tell me about all the agents who have turned you down
    * Call to see if we received the material
    * Send me a query for something I turned down before (even if you rewrote it)
    * Tell me about several books I can choose from. Pick one!
    * Send anything that is single-spaced or in type less than 12 pt.
    * E-mail to our personal addresses.  We no longer accept e-mail queries to these accounts.  Please use submissions@wsherman.com.
    * Fax. We do not accept fax queries
    * Drop it off in person

The bottom line is: do your homework. Be as well prepared as possible. Read the books that will help you present yourself and your work with polish. You want your submission to stand out.

Thanks for your interest in our agency. We wish you all the best!

I've seen a few sites like this giving tons of pointers.  I think they are sick of getting things that are bad/poorly formatted/just plain wrong/not what they rep/better off dead etc etc etc.  Maybe its in hopes of getting some decent letters.  I think for us guys, here on QT and other writing sites who take this stuff seriously and try to do what they ask, it gives us a leg up above the competition.  Maybe its just wishful thinking, but I do hope I am right!

I queried them. Most of the stuff is already covered in a basic query letter and as for the rest of it--tell them you chose their agency because of their through guidelines and that your work will appeal to the audiences that read so-and-so.  They're not asking for much extra.

kimmy, you're always (mostly, when you're not panicking) so upbeat and positive.  Quite a wonderful trait.    Thanks.
And Tabris - good idea.  I'll submit the way I normally do and they'll either reject because I've failed their maneuvers or they'll ask to see something.  Coin toss.

Since Zooks left in their email address, it isn't too hard to figure out.  :wag:
